Aw, love you all too!

I have a bit of experience of this as I'm currently doing a teaching course (having got absolutely nowhere with a lecturer job app! ;o). If you can get some teaching courses done as a student rather than putting it off until post-doc time, it can only be a good thing (with the proviso that your research doesn't suffer).

If you have the opportunity to get some formal teaching in higher ed tution (and you have aspirations to become a lecturer) then you should definitely go for it. These courses will probably allow you to become an associate member of the Higher Education Academy and will put you in good stead for future teaching posts. Competition for lecturing posts is very tough and they will be looking for evidence of teaching competency in addition to research output.

going to do my first conference presentation today.

I'm presenting again next week, still makes me nervous! There is definitely no substitute for practice, and definitely talk aloud when you practice. Time yourself to make sure you are within the time limit (bear in mind that nerves may make you slightly quicker for the real thing). If you are well practiced, it does gives you confidence. Good luck, sure you'll be great!

Is Men Behaving Badly suitable for early afternoon viewing? I seem to recall it being broadcast after the watershed over here (i.e. after 9pm)?

Re: jeans

Apparently, it's all about big pockets with the theory being that the bigger the pockets, the smaller your bum looks, hahaha!!! [Read that in the Daily Mail, and we know how credible that is!!]

Personally, I think you have to be teeny tiny to pull off the skinny jeans thing, but a pair of boot-cut jeans can be very flattering for most people.

where not wear!! All this talk of clothes is affecting my grammar!

It also depends on wear the conference is. If it's somewhere hot, people are much more casual (t-shirt and shorts, even if presenting!). I wish someone had told me that before I wore a suit in 35oC heat...

Ah but you statisticians are a scruffy lot

It's always suits at the conferences I go to (medical field though so lots of consultants about!). I would always wear a suit to present, if just attending you can be more casual. It does depend on the field though so ask other students/post-docs in the department for advice. If still in doubt, I'd go for smart casual (black trousers and smart top would be fine), jeans might be a bit risky! Good luck

PhD terminated after my 1st year Viva!

I think there is a distinction to be made between not mentioning your time as a research student, and making up what you've been doing for a year. The latter is definitely fraudulent and could result in your contract being terminated if you were found out.

NB Just playing Devil's advocate here, I do sympathise with your situation and wish you best of luck for the future. I agree with the others, don't give up. If you really want a PhD then you'll get there.

Re: transferring results
Again, be careful! As you were doing a science PhD, it is likely (but might not be the case) that you took on a project created by your supervisor(s), rather than coming up with a proposal yourself? If so, the results/IP are probably property of the University/Supervisor, as we sign our IP rights to the University when we register as students.

Hmmm, I think honesty is usually the best policy. Think hard about not mentioning your previous time as a research student. It's a small world...

Yeah, that might well help and would probably be a lot more fun than time-managing undergrads...
