Trick or Treat!

Last year I had hardly any children calling so this year I didn't buy so many sweets and inevitably, had about 20 visitors - including a surprising number of teenagers??!

Shame about your lack of callers but I guess you can console yourself by eating the sweets yourself?

Anyone else been visited by hoards of ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties urgently requiring copious quantities of confectionary? I've totally run out of fun size Crunchies (which is a shame as I was hoping there would be a few left over!)!

Dee, do you have a specific supervisor and project in mind at this stage?

Dee, they are two very different funding bodies i.e. I'm not sure one project will be come under the funding criteria for both???

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) is the UK's leading research funding and training agency addressing economic and social concerns.

Master and PhD

In the UK, a full-time taught masters will take 1 year, a full-time PhD will take approximately 3 years. So you should anticipate spending at least 4 years to complete a masters degree followed by a PhD.

That Martin chap is beautiful - too beautiful. Same with Orlando, he's too 'pretty' for me to find him attractive. Like Oranges, I like men to look like men!

Can you do a PhD at two unis?
A

Unfortunately, it's not easy to get money from anyone! Applying for grant funding of any type is generally extremely competitive. Remember that students cannot apply directly to research councils - supervisors must apply for money for a specific PhD projects (student funding, project consumables).

I'm a post-doc...but I did my PhD as a Research Assistant so I was employed as a staff member of the Uni. I had supervisors at 2 different Unis though.

No, the usual case is for the student to be registered at one uni (usually where the main supervisor is based). However, academics at other unis can be listed as official supervisors.

Do you mean have supervisors from different Unis? If so, then yes. This happens a lot in collaborative projects.

I've been posting on this thread for 2 years and 26 days, that's rather worrying!

AAAHHGGHH! got my viva date....
A

DJW, you are very brave to tell us - I kept mine secret and only told you all when I'd passed! I spent the fortnight before my viva on really intense preparation (revising, re-reading papers, preparing any extra material to bring with me). I didn't feel I'd prepared enough (clearly I had because I passed!) and I think I would always have felt that I could have done more, so don't be surprised if you also feel inadequately prepared despite weeks of swotting! Have you arranged a mock with your supervisors? (I'm always going on about this but I really think it's crucial, especially if you've not been in a viva situation before). Preferably arrange for a couple of weeks before the actual viva so that if something comes up that you don't feel sufficiently prepared for, you then have the time to read up on it.
