It's easiest if you make a list of your outgoings i.e. add up how much you will spend per month on food, clothes, hair cuts/toiletrys, petrol/car insurance or public transport etc etc. You'll then have a better idea about how much you can afford to spend on housing.

AnonGerman, please can you translate?

1) Kochen Sie Wasser (water, I know that much!) in eimen Topf auf (GroBe bitte je nach WarmekissengroBe und Anzahl wahlen).

2) Legen Sie ein dunnes Tuch in den Topf und legen Sie dann das/die Warmekissen ca. (circa, bit of latin there!) 10-15 minuten in das kochen Wasser. Der Inhalt wird wieder klar und flussig.

Stick it in hot water for 10 to 15 minutes?

3) Nehmen Sie das Kissen aus dem Wasser. Sollten sich noch feste Partikel im Kissen befinden oder nach kurzer Zeit die Flussigkeit wieder fester werden, dann schutteln Sie das Kissen etwas und legen Sie es nach einmal fur wenige Minuten in das kachende Wasser.

4) lst in der Anwendung eine sichere Desinfizierung notwendig, so muss das Warmekissen vorher zur Reaktivierung 30 Minuten gekocht werden.

Actually today I recieved a freebie gel handwarmer from Sigma Aldrich - shame the instructions are in German (might need AnonGerman's help to ensure I don't come a cropper, babelfish translation was useless).

There was no heating in our office yesterday - very odd as I work in a hospital so obviously there aren't hoards of people having weeks off over Christmas!

I totally sympathise with you. I have a similar problem in that my boyfriend cannot understand why (now that I'm a Post-doc) I am still having to work at home (unpaid) in the evenings and at weekends. He (and also my family to a certain extent) don't get the concept that it is in my own interest to spend time writing papers or conference abstracts or working on grant applications etc. I don't know what the answer is really, it's hard because most people who haven't been to University have no concept of what a PhD involves. I think the only people who truly understand have either done one, or are currently doing one!
