Hello, Can anyone access this for me please? Thank you:)
Can anyone help please?
Hi, Can anyone help me with this article? i don't have access through Athens.
Thanks:)
Hey Ultimax,
I submitted the proposal, the 12,000 word review of the literature and last week submitted the 10,000 which was basically framing the theory I plan to use for my research. These are not completed chapters but having done this, I do feel a bit better about the whole process. I have read widely around the topic and wrote about it before narrowing down the focus. The first stuff I submitted can be teased out and used for my contextual background chapter whereas the second stuff is more of an actual literature review. Its been a painful process but I think i'm getting there. I like this map (hope the link posts!) I think i'm currently coming out of literature fog!
The only thing is, I'm terrible at talking about my area of research with anyone. Its really getting to me!. I just mumble at my supervisors and I'm dreading when I have to officially present!
As in monthly meetings, The first few we just bounced over a few ideas of what I was planning to do. Most of the focus was on getting the proposal submitted. Perhaps the most formal meeting was when I had submitted the first ROL. My supervisors advised me that I needed to narrow down focus. Meetings up until this point again have just been discussing what I've done (well me basically telling them what I've done) in terms of reading, writing and personal development. i.e training, seminars and conferences.
Next big meeting is tomorrow!! Eeeeeekkkk!! If you've not seen the link before I hope you like it.:) Good luck!
I'm 8 months in. In this time I've completed a 4000 word proposal, a 12000 word review of the literature (not an actual literature review) narrowed down my focus and wrote another 10,000 words specifically related to my topic. Went to workshops, seminars and a conference. I was very anxious at the start of my phd that I wasn't doing enough and I still feel that way just now. I think it goes part and parcel. I hope to at least have my methods chapter completed and first drafts of my two literature chapters by the end of my first year.
This has just happened to me. I was touching up my lit/review and framing of my research today and I have discovered a paper that has framed the exact same topic in the exact same way. It has the same quotes I've used, its adapted the same models. The only difference is that its in a different country. The paper however offers a theoretical framework. There are no details about an actual studying being conducted so i'm hoping I can integrate it into my work.
Hey,
Thank you so much for to your reply it was quite inspirational that there's a good chance I will improve. I have accepted that she just may not like me but it still gets under my skin when she tries to show me up. I'm just going to learnt to deal with it though. I've stayed off campus for a week and just been focusing on narrowing down my topic. I have a meeting with a researcher tomorrow who is looking a t a similar area within my field so i''m hoping I will be clearer tomorrow! I hope one day I can write about this experience in a positive manner for someone else:)
Hi Hazy,
Thanks for the reply. I have been practising and using signallying techniques but I tend to just freeze up and everything goes out my head. I know if i dont get over this i wont be able to present at a conference. The best of it it is I took undergrad seminars throughout my masters and didn't have any issues, in fact I rather enjoyed it.
There is also a colleague in the dept who seems to have taken a dislike to me . The result is she tries to bring me down at any opportunity given. I've been told just to grin and bear it but it doesnt make attending seminars or meetings any easier. (an established academic not another student)' I suppose i'm looking for advice on how to thicken my skin and boost my confidence to deal with these situations.
Hi folks,
I am absolutely hopeless at orally presenting and just cant seem to articulate my points coherently, even in meetings with my supervisors. I end up just blabbing alot of rubbish and come across as if I don't have a clue. I am from a working class background and have a broad accent which I feel I personally grapple with when in academic circles. My cultural background is very different from everyone else in my dept and I'm very aware of this and its adding to my insecurities about oral presentation which seems to be deteriorating rather than improving. The whole transition has been tough, i'm 6 months in and this is something I really need to address. If anyone has advice it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hi,
I'm 12,000 words into my lit review having submitted my proposal and everything was going good until pow.... I find a paper that has basically addressed my topic. It was hidden away in a very expensive book! Least to say my metal health is teatering on the edge just now and i'm just looking for ideas on how I can deal with this without losing all my work:(:(:(
The question the paper address is similar to mines - except I am measuring what the paper measures but under different circumstances. I am using a complete different population and a different method, my sutdyy differs as it is measuring differences between three populations - one which has access to resources. But the overall just of the question is the same.
The answer is probably in front of me but my head is all over the place with literature. Just looking for some friendly advice :(:(
I know this will widely vary but I'm starting my PhD in October and live quite a bit a way from the university. Was just wondering if people could give an indication as to how much time they are required to be in Uni. Can you do most of the work from home? I get that when the primary research has to be done this will require time on campus or elsewhere, but is it ok to work on the Lit review etc from home?
Appreciate anyone who can give me advice
Thanks:-)
