Well done. Fantastic news. And as others have said, it's an inspiration for those of us submitting soon!!

Job applications

Got a job :p Turned out to be 6 outright rejections before this one.

Nice little (permanent!) lecturing job. The uni's not as prestigious as my PhD one, but the job looks great. And it's mine. Very pleased.
Now I just have to finish off this PhD and everything is good.

Zuengler, J. (1988). Identity Markers and L2 Pronunciation. Studies in Second language Acquisition. 10(1):33-49.

If you can get it, I'll PM you my details.

Thanks for this, much appreciated.

Thanks anyway. Yes, my library should definitely have print versions, I just don't go in very often!

Has anyone got online access to the journal 'Studies in Second Language Acquisition' from 1988? My library only has from 1997.

Thanks

I'm on 5 rejections out of 5 now. 2 yesterday - bad day.

Naively, I really didn't see this coming. Looks like I'll be knocking at ESRC's door along with many many others :)

Passed viva - wahoo!

Congratulations! Really pleased for you. That's excellent, and very inspiring, news. Well done!!!!

It's good to have a target ;-)

Job applications

I'm in that stage now. Still got a while til I submit (Sep), but jobs are being advertised. Absolutely no post-docs though, so going for lecturer posts. I have tons of teaching and lecturing experience (pre and during phd), but first two applications rejected. I think lack of publications is the problem. It's not expected to publish during phd in my field, but I think the normal route is phd > postdoc > lecturer. But if there are no postdoc positions??

So, I'm on 2 failures out of 2, with another one waiting. What numbers you got? :-)

What subject areas are others working in

Linguistics (sociophonetics)

VARBRUL

Any sociolinguists here familiar with VARBRUL? Got a question :)

Dragon Naturally speaking
B

I've written a about 20000 words using Dragon NS, and I think it's great. Yes it needs training, but it doesn't take long, and the training is ongoing, meaning it gets better and better. It's easy to teach it specialist words. You can even get it to read some text (previous chapters, essays etc) to pick up new vocabulary.

I just sit back in my chair, and dictate my words of wisdom. Can't recommend it enough.

Hours you put in per week?
B

I agree it depends on subject area, but I think it's totally doable. I'm 2.5 years in and am on target to finish in 3/3.5. If I'm honest I've put in fewer than the hours you suggest, but the hours I put in are totally focussed. I spent my first year worrying I was doing too little, but eventually concluded that a lot of people spend a lot of time doing not much and still put it down as 'phd work'. I realise the next few months will be extremely hard work, but hey, it'll be worth it.

I am primary carer for 3 young kids, wife working shifts, and 9.30-3 is the most I can expect. You've got kids, so you'll know about *proper* time management ;-)

You'll be fine :)

post christmas marking mountain :(

Quote From walminskipeasucker:

Don't mean to seem facetious but I want to do some marking! 2 years and 3 months into my PhD and I've never had to do it once! My Saturday evening is proving no better than yours, except for my mountain of work entails working on chapters for my work.

The novelty soon wears off, and at 2 years 3 months in, it's the last thing you need! There'll be plenty more in the years to come if you stay in academia!
