Tackling the corrections
B

What's your deadline? I was given just a month to turn around my corrections, get the thesis hard bound, and resubmit it. Would have taken half that time in practice, but various academics were away/out-of-the-country due to Easter.

Personally I wanted to get my corrections out of the way as quickly as possible, not least so I could graduate next month. How many corrections do you have to do? Have you made any start? Do some of them look more appealing than others, for example easy typos to fix? If so start with those and that might get you into the swing of things.

I also found listening to podcasts while doing the corrections took my mind off the tedium :p

58 minutes and counting

I can remember exactly how I felt with under an hour to go to my viva, and Jinkim's post summed it up very well.

Hope things are going ok.

undertaking it from home
B

I did my part-time PhD totally based at home, and I recently successfully completed it. On the plus side I was able to work when I wanted, in an undisturbed way. On the downside I was incredibly isolated from other students and university life, which cut off a lot of the normal support mechanisms. Luckily this forum was a really good substitute when I needed support.

Which should I do?
B

If it was me I'd go for option 3. You still have many months after then to deal with the PhD stuff.

The most frightening species of health professional?

Quote From catalinbond:

However this year I discovered the joy of the sports massage. You have to lie there while someone inflicts a huge amount of pain or your legs (in my case) You know it's gonna help, you've chosen to be there, but while there you just want to scream and never run again (so you never need another massage!)

My Mum does this for a job. She's reduced international rugby players to tears. Quite funny ;-)

Excellent news! Congratulations.

So where are the old schoolers 04-07

Good luck Bazzab if you go for a PhD again. I was a full-time PhD student from 1994-6 but left due to falling seriously ill. More recently I signed up for a part-time PhD and recently completed it. The previous PhD experience put me in a really strong position. I knew what to expect the second time around, and was in a better position to make the most of opportunities. So good luck if you try too.

When supervisor takes ages to get back to you..
B

Ah ... That makes a difference. I was just thinking of when I sent in a submission and it was just in my name. My supervisor didn't even see the resulting paper that I wrote afterwards.

If push comes to shove, if I was in your position, I'd send it in on Monday anyway.

Can't you just send it as it is? I've submitted abstracts on my own before, without supervisor feedback.

Can I nominate another one? Sneaks's spinal consultant has reminded me of the totally incompetent hospital doctor who performed my lumbar puncture 13 years ago. It took 15 minutes of very painful probing with a very long needle to find the right spot. He commented "I'm not having a good day". I struggled not to swear back! And I screamed out loud. At least I got home that night, but I had deep bruising which painkillers wouldn't touch and lasted for many weeks.

But luckily his kind seems to be rare. He was just utterly incompetent.

Afraid I'd nominate the obvious dentist. I've had quite a few over the years, and some of them were positively terrifying. And after the number of fillings and extractions I've had I'd find it hard to think of another scarier health professional.

Though as a female student a nurse about to do a smear test is rather terrifying ... Mmm!

I don't think sounding like an academic is so much the issue in terms of using better terms. Rather you should focus on giving a clear and relevant answer. And for that your supervisor's advice to take your time is really good. Feel free to stop, pause and think about your answer in the viva before giving it. There's no rush to launch into the first thing that occurs to you.

Glad your meeting went well. Sounds like it was really productive.

I'm going to look at the macTex tonight

It comes with a couple of front ends: TeXShop and TeXworks. I've been using TeXShop so far, and finding it very easy to use.

I've just LaTeX'd my Chapter 1 of my thesis. No footnotes, but will figure out how to do those next.

Excellent! Glad you got it sorted out in the end. Good luck with the funding application.
