External examiner appointed - don't know whether to change him.

If it makes you feel any better - I got my viva date last night and am in a state of complete... well... I don't know. Complete something, and that something is not good... back to the thesis....

Oh crikey! I don't have mine yet, and I submitted last week. I'm not sure how I'd have coped knowing a viva date before submission! Good luck.

And Wally, don't worry too much. The examiner should take a professional approach, and will look at your thesis on its merits. And there's the internal as well, so it's not all down to the external. But if you have doubts speak to your supervisor. I expect it will be ok.

I had difficulty choosing my external because my topic is so niche that there isn't anyone suitable who wouldn't have had a huge conflict of interest (having supervised a closely related PhD in the past for example). Ended up going with an external who's good for the broader cultural/evidence context, and so hopefully able to judge where my work fits into it. Hoping that was a good choice!

If you have a really bad head cold might you not be better to spend a couple of days away from the lab/work? It might help you recover better. Also prevents spreading the germs around ;-)

And don't think you can't afford to take a break. What you can't afford to do is to burn yourself out with constant pressure.

Could you maybe speak to your supervisor about this?

But do allow yourself time to recover from the bug.

I'm sure you'll be fine, examiners would far rather have a concise thesis than a hefty one full of waffle!

Thanks! Yes that's what my supervisor said, which was very reassuring :p

(is there a known effective way of going about the discussion?)

My supervisors always stress to me that I have to figure out the "so what" in the discussion, i.e. what's significant about the results so far. Sometimes that can produce quite surprising results, that aren't so obvious. Might that help you? How would you explain what you've found to a non-PhD friend?

Right, word count now stands at 15,1216, a grand total of 942 words today. It does include references I'm afraid, but given only a few hours were spent specifically on the thesis I'm pretty happy.

Normally footnotes/endnotes would be included in a PhD thesis word count, but not a final bibliography. Not sure which of those you mean by references.

Good luck with the rest of the words. I was too short in my thesis (my department subject expects 80-100K and I came in at 70K), but was reassured by various academics (including the one who is going to be my internal) that it would be ok.

Vivid Viva Daymares, etc.

I, too, went through a state of paralysis, in my case about 8 months before submission. I couldn't see how I would get there, was totally terrified of what would come next. But I got through it, by - as the others have said - focusing on smaller goals. Once I got into the final stage of the writing it got easier. And I took things one step at a time.

And last week I submitted and now await my viva date. And I'm less scared by that prospect than I was 8 months ago! So it can be done.

Good luck.

Upcoming vivas

How's the preparation getting on Jateet? I've just heard who my internal + chairperson will be, which makes things seem that much more tangible. No firm viva date yet, but because all the examiners have now been appointed it's just a matter of fixing up a when next.

I've been taking a little break since submitting my thesis last week, but plan to resume gentle viva preparation (reading the book I recommended) this week. I'm also planning to meet my sup for an informal chat about what to expect in the viva. And I'll be thinking about general issues that might be raised by the examiners, though I can't prepare by tackling a long list of potential viva questions due to severe memory problems.

Having a PhD 'shouldn't hurt my chances'...

My husband briefly looked at job hunting away from academia years after finishing his PhD. It wasn't encouraging. He was typically told he was too highly qualified (despite being a programming-based computer scientist, and so well able to do a high responsibility software programming job), and had to persuade them to even consider him. Luckily a research opening appeared, just as he was losing one academic job. And 8+ years later he's still there, though I always wonder for the future of his job, given the current economic climate.

Good luck.

Quote From Sue2604:

Have thought about postdocs, but I think they say that you need to have graduated to apply - so that means May next year for me, realistically the round of post docs after that won't be till end of next year!!

Do double check that. Here in the UK people just need to have "completed", and sometimes can even start post docs as they're tying up their PhDs. Graduation is a formality that can happen later.

how to reference online pdf

It might not be a webpage but the PDF must have a web address. Just cite that, as you would a web page, and give the date accessed.

Quote From jepsonclough:

my boss at work (not my supervisor but my work uni are paying some of the costs of my part-time phd so obviously have a stake in my outputs) has set me a target of 10,000 word to be written this year - in light of what is said is this excessive - it is a humanities / management topic and I have got 5 years part-time funding contribution but compared to people who're submitting this year it seems a lot.

It doesn't sound excessive to me. Humanities students often have to aim for 80,000 words total. If you write your literature survey and introduction in the first year (which would be reasonable) you'd easily reach somewhere like 10,000. Especially if you write even more than that as you go.

It's the second, because it's the instructions that are doing the confirming, and because they're plural the confirm form has to be as in "they confirm" rather than "it confirms".
