Well done Batfink! The sun has officially been and gone up North, so I'm working away!

I've done really well today so I'm very pleased, although it did help that hubby was home for most of the day and I didn't have to deal with puppy distractions! I will have finished one section of my findings if I can just get this really difficult bit written, I am determined! I then need to go to the gym (down)

Not sure if I'll be working over the weekend, will have to see what mood I'm in. So if I'm not about, have a great weekend all!

Hope your day went well yesterday Batfink!

I made a tiny bit of progress yesterday, but really want to make more today. I don't really have any excuses for not doing work today either.

First and only goal- findings chapters

The One Goal Thread
B

Well done on the interviews Batfink!

I was good and went to the gym yesterday, was a bit of a shock to the system!

I also did a massive restructuring of my findings chapters, which means I now have 4 chapters rather than 2. They all need serious work eugh. I'm also thinking of combining my findings and discussion sections (or at least sort of) because it makes much more sense. But I'm in a pickle because it means writing my findings and then going back to my hash of a literature review to find out whether my study supports any previous literature, and then writing the discussion parts. But I can't really do that until I've sorted my lit review! So I'm in one of those 'where on earth do I start' moods, which equates to a 'let's go into denial and procrastinate instead' mood.

Okay, rant over, I'll get there! Going to have lunch with hubby, then hubs is off to work and I'll get started.

First and only goal: get cracking with chapter 1

Good luck today Batfink!

ESRC 1+3 Funding question

Hi Runner,

Expecting people to reply in less than thirty five minutes is a bit much to be honest.

Anyway, you will find the answer to your question in the ESRC Postgraduate Funding Guide. I'm almost certain you don't have to pay the grant/tuition fees back.

Sounds like you had a good day Batfink!

I need to get cracking because I really have to go to the gym today, I haven't been in months!

Goal 1- sort draft contents page
Goal 2- carry on editing findings chapter 1

Good luck today all!

Morning all,

I was at uni on friday, and then had sat/sun and mon off naughty me, so I need to get cracking now!

Goal 1- chase up feedback
Goal 2- do cv
Goal 3- do some photocopying

I can then get on with editing my first findings chapter, which is going to be a very lengthy process!

Good luck today all!

Married women and doing PhD

I think that's brilliant, if only we had the same in the UK!

I actually think it's a really bad idea.

Rather than create divisions (and somewhat arbitrary ones at that) it would be a lot healthier if academia recognised that having a real life outside of work is a healthy and normal thing, and people should not be expected to sacrifice that to the cause of knowledge advancement.

I don't deny that juggling married life with academia is tough, but I don't see what makes it uniquely more of a challenge than, say, caring for an elderly relative, being a parent, having health issues of one's own etc.

Life is a challenge. Academia shouldn't deny that or resort to tokenistic 'solutions' to single out subgroups.

[Edited to add: I'm really not denying the challenges that marital status can bring to an academic career, and I hope that people in that situation find support and recognition in this thread. I just find the idea of singling out *married women* for support, as described in the opening post, a really weird idea, and pretty excluding]

I agree Hazyjane. I'm married and don't think it adds any more/less demands than e.g being a parent, caring for someone etc. The UK is also no longer living in the prehistoric ages where married women do all the housework/shopping/'caring' for their husbands, although obviously culture plays a role here.

I can't imagine anything worse than going to a programme specifically for 'married ladies', as if we would need some special group for support! Everyone has demands in their lives so, as Hazyjane added, singling out married women and suggesting that they have 'special types of problems' isn't good in my opinion. That isn't to mention that many people are in long-term relationships and aren't married!

If people do find this thread useful, then that's great. But then this could start cliques on what is meant to be an overall supportive forum. I could happily start a 'support thread for people completing a PhD who also have an out of control puppy', but I think in life we all have problems and the key thing we have in common here is our PhD, so we can all support each other through it.

Morning all,

I wasn't around yesterday as I had a big important presentation to do; it went really well, and the person I desperately wanted to impress said she was really impressed, and said my presentation style is great! So that's good news.

I'm also off to take a lecture this afternoon so shouldn't be around much today, then it's off out for tea with hubs tonight!

Linda, just wanted to add; we have a puppy and we rent :) although they are VERY hard work, you wouldn't believe it until you got one! Definitely prepared me for having children, although I guess I won't be able to go out and leave a baby at home, like I can do with puppy!

Goal 1- email presentation from yesterday
Goal 2- email E
Goal 3- journal

I also benefit from the early starts; I'm usually at my desk by 8, and easily finish my work by 5pm with a 90 min lunch (to eat as well as walk dog and play with her!) And that's with a couple of tea breaks in between!

Linda the diet I'm doing is Slimming World, seems pretty good as you can eat A LOT! I've done weightwatchers a couple of times (once very successfully, the second time disastrous) so thought I'd give it a bash!

I'm done for the day anyway, see you tomorrow!

Goal 1 is done, now off to tackle goal 2!

Hi Linda!

I slept in until 8am, that's a lie in for me!

I must get cracking on todays work.

Goal 1- practice presentation 1
Goal 2- finish final edit of conference presentation and time
Goal 3- send conference presentation to sup for comments

I'm hoping to get this all done this morning, because I desperately need to go food shopping, but before I can go I need to work out what healthy foods I need to buy for my new diet, eugh!

Good luck today all!

Sounds like it has been a successful day all round for us, even me! I have managed to completely edit my conference presentation, just need to produce a handout thing for it, think of any possible questions I may be asked, and also need to time it again!

That's me done for the day too, see you tomorrow Linda, and Batfink hope the seminars etc aren't too depressing tomorrow!

The One Goal Thread
B

Don't be tempted by the choccie Linda, remember the wedding dress hehe! You must be getting really excited!

Well I have actually made progress with my presentation, hooray, thank goodness for mytomatoes! I always do this; it takes me ages to actually 'start' something for whatever reason, but then once I get on with the task it's not half as bad as I thought it would be!

The One Goal Thread

Oh how annoying Linda, I hate it when technology slows you down! Batfink sounds like you're doing great, I also loved doing my interviews!

Well I am ashamed to say that I'm on my second brew of the day, I have eaten a mars bar by 9:30am, and I STILL haven't looked at my presentation! I will do this, and I will not post again until I've done something productive!

The One Goal Thread

Well all I managed to get done was printing it out, oops! So my goal for today is really just to get going with editing my conference presentation, what a joy.
