The One Goal Thread

Hi Batfink! I'm here, but just for the morning. Sounds like you're making great progress!

My first and only goal today is to finish my last analysis table, then I can FINALLY set up my new computers! I'm not looking forward to the whole transferring work and installing everything though (down)

A wash of motivation has come over me...I have completed 4 of 6 analysis tables, 3 of which I've done today, and I thought they'd take me ages to do! I'm also going to make a start on the last two tonight (I may sack off the gym in order of productivity). I think it's because I want to get them all done on my old computer to avoid any formatting issues when moving from word 2007 to 2010...I figured if I do them all on my old computer then it won't get confusing! So obviously, the sooner I get these damn analysis tables done, the sooner I can play on my shiny new PC!

Therefore, for all those with no motivation, I have the answer to your troubles; go buy yourselves a new PC (the shinier the better) (up)

Good to see you back MissPiggy, I think lots of us had long breaks off over Christmas, just trying to get back into it now!

I managed to complete my goal yesterday, although it was really hard! And I then went and bought my shiny PC and shiny netbook...I haven't opened them yet but I keep squealing at them every time I look at them, how sad!

Anyway my plan for the day is;

Goal 1- complete second analysis table (this will take me all day!)
Goal 2- go to the gym before tea
Goal 3- set up shiny new PC and shiny new netbook, ready to play with them both all weekend (up)

Disturbed and not sure what to do for the best

Let me know if I can help/be a listening ear :-)

Well done on your writing Linda!

I'm still plodding on, I didn't realise a task could be so boring! Anyway, I'll keep going, the PC and netbook are getting closer and closer!

IPad or netbook?
B

Thankyou! I've been googling and the samsung NC10, NC110 AND NF110 all seem to have really good reviews, but the first two seem to be out of stock everywhere (I think they've been discontinued), so I think I'm going for the NF110 8-)

IPad or netbook?

Thanks both of you! I am definitely going to go for a netbook, just not sure which one now! Hazyjane, do you know how much memory yours has? A lot have 1GB, others have 4GB but are obviously more expensive. I'm just wondering whether 1GB is enough for it to go at a fair speed.

Also, I've heard that some webpages open all wierd on netbooks, does any have experience of this?

Uuughh, I'm doing such a boring task today; I'm finishing off analysing my interviews, and at the moment I need to produce a table of themes for each group, including all supporting quotations...I have six groups, and I'm not even a quarter of the way through the first group. Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh (down)(sprout)(sprout)(sprout)(sprout)

I will be REALLY happy if I can get the first table done today, and then go and buy a shiny new PC and also a shiny new netbook 8-)

IPad or netbook?

Hi all,

I've decided that considering I have just under two years left of my funding, I might as well get with the times and update my technology (not an excuse to buy new shiny things, honest). I've decided to buy a new desktop pc which is what I do all my work on, seeing as mine at the moment takes 20 minutes to start up and has no working CD drive. I think I've found a good deal so I'll get that today.

However, I also want to buy a netbook or IPad for surfing and maybe a small bit of work. This would only be used in the evening/weekends, when I'm sat in the lounge with hubby and want to have a mooch online, maybe to check emails etc and read a few articles. Am I best with a netbook or Ipad?

I love netbooks but I'm not sure how fast they are or whether they're any good. But then Ipads are much more expensive, I'm not sure I'd get enough use out of them, and I'm not so keen on touch screen (I have a touch screen phone which drives me up the wall).

Any advice/recommendations would be much appreciated!

Also, are there any other cool gadgets you have that I could use as an excuse to buy because they'd be 'helpful'?

Hi Eska/Batfink,

I'm doing okay today surprisingly, plodding on with my analysis now I know what needs doing.

But I'm now off to have a late lunch (my stomach is having a major rumble), then I need to take crazy puppy for a walk to try and tire her out, before hopefully getting another hour or so of work done later.

Hi all!

I haven't been on this thread for a long time (was busy doing my interviews before Christmas and then had two weeks off), but I really need to get back into it now. Not looking forward to getting back into work mode!

Today my goals are;

1- review where I'm up to
2- carry on with analysis

Hope everyone is successful with their goals today!

How much time do you take off around the holidays?
B

I won't be working between 22nd Dec-3rd Jan, so nearly 2 weeks. I've done this for the past couple of years and I LOVE it! I used to say that I would do work between Christmas and New Year but it never happened, so now I always plan to not do any work in between and have a big break. Hubby's office is also on shutdown from 22nd-2nd, so lots of time off together (up)

Married or single name for PhD?
B

I registered for my PhD as Miss C, and was known as Miss C for my first year. I recently got married and took my hubby's name, so I am now known at uni (and elsewhere) as Mrs B. When I finish I will be Dr B. Personal preference; I definitely didn't want 'two names', one is enough for me! It would have been different if I had had publications maybe. But one of the main reasons why I wanted to get married was to have the same surname as my husband.

Hi all,

Sorry I've been AWOL for a while...we have a puppy who is causing havoc with our lives (Sneaks check your inbox :-x)! Trying to do work whilst keeping an eye out for any toilet accidents is extremely difficult!

Goal 1- write up meeting
Goal 2- chase up non-responding schools
Goal 3- email further schools
Goal 4- plan for next few weeks
Goal 5- put up fence in back garden with hubby, to keep pesky puppy away from plants

:-s

Doing a PhD "off campus" in the social sciences?
B

I've just started my second year, and I'm in the social sciences. I have just moved from being 30 mins away from my uni, to 90 mins away. I go to uni once a week but only for teaching, it would be much less otherwise. So yes, it's possible!

And I'm a full-time PhD student, who is funded :-)
