Quote From Ady:

I constantly have that problem, very annoying and yet tough to say 'No' particularly when it emanates from your own supervisor as is also my situ. You could do what she wants this week but then ask for a meeting to sort out your schedule for the months ahead, i.e. remind her that you're doing a PhD and are concerned about time slipping away etc.

Didn't manage to say 'No' to that Spots 'n Stripes bar I just had :-(

she seems to have this odd perception of time - she asks me to do a job that will take 2 whole days and at the end of that 2 whole days I'll send her the work, having worked every hour I could on it and she'll say "and what have you done on your PhD in the last 2 days" .....erm, nothing, because I haven't got Bernards F***ing watch!

This made me spit my tea out Sneaks. How great it would be to have Bernard's watch!

And on a different note, losing 2 stone by May is definitely achievable!

Right, I've done goal 2 and I'm up to 1500 words today, but my concentration is quickly disappearing so goal 3 is to finish the section I'm working on now, and then call it a day for my writing.

Can anyone make sense of this sentence?

You clever people! Thanks a lot to you all, I can now write about it and understand it, rather than just pretending I understand it!

Another little Endnote question

Thanks all!

Can anyone make sense of this sentence?
B

Although I'm risking sounding incredibly intellectually challenged, I was just wondering whether anyone can make sense of this sentence, in a journal I'm reading,

"Observers are often not informed about how the actor has behaved in similar situations. Observers therefore base their causal judgements entirely on consensus information".

What does "consensus information" mean in this context? I thought I was on a roll today after doing no work for 3 weeks, but I've been staring at this sentence and can't make sense of it! It's related to pscyh/attribution if that makes any difference.

Thanks all!

Star-shaped- plump isn't the word for me, I feel positively enormous! I need to lose 11lbs in 10 weeks because that's when my first fitting for my wedding dress is! I then need to stay that size until my wedding...hmm that may not happen.

Sneaks- what a pain :( is there any way you can ignore her? I don't really know what to suggest. Try not to panic though.

Anyway, I've surprised myself and wrote 750 words today so far, and most of it sounds alright!

Goal 2- finish section I'm working on

Another little Endnote question

Hi all, just a quick question,

In cite while you write, how do I get Endnote to reference "Weiner in 2006" or "Weiner (2006)" as a citation? I've just been using "insert citation" for all the others, but I'm not sure about how to do this one!

Thank you :-)

Morning all, and Happy New Year!

I haven't been on here for what seems like weeks, because I have been ill, followed by enjoying myself far too much over Christmas and New Year. So today is the start of two things- getting back into work and starting my diet! What a tough day!

Anyway, my first goal of the day is to get stuck into writing- it is very likely going to be rubbish writing, but at least I'll have something down on paper, however awful it is!

I'm aiming for 10 tomatoes today!

Good luck to those who are attempting to get back into the swing of things today!

Journal article request :)

Thankyou 8-)

Journal article request :)

Hi all,

If anyone has access to the following article I would be most grateful if you could let me know,

Pottick, K. J. and Davis, D. M. (2001) Attributions of Responsibility for Children's Mental Health Problems: Parents and Professionals American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, Vol. 71 Issue 4, p426

How to plan my lit review?
B

Thanks Jepson, that's really helpful!

I've actually managed to get something down on paper. I'm glad my sup asked me to do a plan, because it really made me think about it, so even if it is no use in the long run at least it makes sense now!

Batfink you poor thing, it doesn't sound like you've had much luck recently! Keep on at your lettings agency- I rang mine every day, sometimes three times a day, when our heater stopped working! Make sure you take your sups advice and have some proper time off!

Woohoo goal 1 is done.

Goal 2- find journals in Endnote for topics 1, 2 and 3

Morning all,

I did actually do all my goals yesterday which is good. My first couple of goals are;

- plan lit review (or at least get something on paper to show sup I've actually done something for the past two weeks!)
- go through Endnote for journals to read regarding topics 1, 2 and 3
- start reading journals regarding topic 1

How to plan my lit review?
B

Hi all,

My sup has asked for a plan of my literature review, but as I only started my PhD two months ago, I'm finding this incredibly difficult. Since I started in October, I've been focusing on other work rather than actually reading any literature in my area- such as worrying about ethics/thinking about why I'm actually doing my study/considering research questions (which I was able to do as my PhD relates to my MA dissertation).

So basically, what an earth an I meant to write in my plan?! I intend to investigate three specific areas, so obviously they need to go in there, but because I haven't had time to read much literature, that's all I have to write! I presume sup is making me do this so I actually think about where my research is going, but I really don't want to send her a plan of my lit review which is only half a page long!

Any thoughts are much appreciated :)

Another little endnote question (sorry!)
B

Hi all.

So I'm STILL trying to work out how to use Endnote. Just one question- I'm now trying to 'cite while I write' but I'm getting a bit confused. On the document I'm working on, when I put my bibliography in it plonks itself in the middle of my writing, rather than at the end of my work. Any ideas how I can solve this?

Thank you!
