Google Chrome vs Firefox
C

I really likes firefox until the last update when they got rid of the little arrow next to the back button so you could only go back to previous page and not pick where you want to go back to.

I'm back on internet explorer, but need to do something. My lap top will not display my yahoo.com email. I don't know why because it works fine on my uni computer which uses internet explorer.

But apart from that I find internet explorer fine.

A really simple statistics question
C

======= Date Modified 04 Jul 2011 22:29:36 =======
I'd either do it in months, or if you want years and months then convert to decimal places, i.e. 15 years and 6 months would be 15.5 etc.

As for the standard devation with missing values I'd work it out for the data you have, unless you can impute the values based on something else or there are al lot of missing values, and I'm not sure what to suggest then.

Hope that helps.

chicks Vs mice/drosophila
C

I'm not a lab based person, but in the building where I used to be based there was a PhD student using chicks. She got good publications out of her work, and went on to walk into a post doc immediately after she finished. I'm not 100% sure what she does now but I think it's using mice rather than chicks so don't think it's held her back.

Plus the fly food really smells. i used to have to hold my breath whenever i walked along what I called 'fly corridor' but people who work with flies do say you get used to it. I don't believe them!

another paper request

Thanks for off Ady. For some reason it is letting me access that journal again today. Weird!

PhD superstitions?
C

I like to get my formatting done early. I hate the way raggedy test looks!

Don't think I'e got any superstitions. MAybe I need to get some!

The moaning thread
C

I love a good rant thread. Another forum I post on has a general rant thread where people rant about everything and anything and I read it nearly everyday. The best rants are from people working in offices who seem to grow a hatred for their colleagues and bosses, makes me glad I'm doing a PhD sometimes.
Anyway i can't belive I never saw this thread last year, I could have had some proper ranting about how much I hated my PhD. I still do hate it a bit, but actually seeing some good while I write it up. I just wish I'd got on and done it sooner as I'm getting panicky about finishing on time.

Happy bunny!

Think I need to sleep more...just typed congratulations in as my username!!

Anyway Congratulations, :-) seem's like you're topic is interesting to a lot of people. I've kinda been thinking mine will be read by bout 6 people - 7 if I make my boyfriend proof read it!

Conference paper/poster/abstract
C

I've never had to provide a paper for a conference, only a poster.
I think whether you can reuse stuff depends on the conference, as I have had ones where they have stipulated that the work must not have been previously presented elsewhere. i think I took that a bit far last year, as I had a poster that had never really been presented as I was unable to get to the confernce becasue of the ash cloud. The poster only ever got displayed online as they decided to display the posters of people who had been unable to traval that year. I went to a conference three months later and made a completely new poster of slightly different data. Hardly anyone looked at that poster, and probably no one looked at the original poster, so it was a whole load of wasted work really!

citing citations
C

On a similar note (hope you don't mind me putting it here) I've been concerned about citations where I've got the information I need form the abstract but have not been able to get the whole article. I've cited it as if I had got the whole article where I haven't been able to.

As for the OP I've tried to go for the original source, though have gone for secondary sources where I have read review articles, as otherwise I'd have hundreds on the same topic! I've found amazon quite good for getting to look inside some books where I've wanted to cited them but my library hasn't had the original. Although it doesn't quite count as reading thw hole book it's given me enough to feel I can cited it as a primary source! Otherwise if there's just a few important ones you could go for an interlibrary loan to get the book.

A few general questions about PhD's in the UK
C

1. Yeah that sounds right. Most PhDs are geared around an Autumn start though can be started earlier or later. When I was interviewed for mine they asked when I could start, but as I was in a current job I couldn't til Oct (interview April). I have friends who started at mid points and it seems to work fine.

2. Some PhDs are hired as Graduate Teaching Assistants and will have to do a certain amount of teaching. Some are hired with project funding and no teaching requirment. I'm in the second category, but I have been able to do some teaching as and when I wanted to during my PhD. It gave me some money and experience to put on my CV. GTAs get good teaching experience but it can take a fair bit of time away from your studies.

I don't think I'm seen as an employee - more as a student. I get no officail time off, but equally have no set hours or days. Again this can depend on subject and on your supervisor. Mine rarely see me and during my first year certainly I could ahve disappeared for the whole summer and they wouldn't have known!

Staring failure in the face
C

I'm coming to the end of forth year and swing between thinking this is doable to "oh my god I'm gonna fail!!"

If I can draft a chapter a week I'll be ok..... but U also have to mark 42 undergraduate essays by next weds too. And I don't have a good work ethic sometimes!

Don't know if this helps. My plan is to keep plodding on and hope I have something coherent to hand in at the end of September.

Early submission in 6 weeks, viva in 7 weeks!
C

wow.... I'm looking to have a first draft done by then! Good luck wsith the submission and hope it works out with the fiunding too. Either way it'll be nice to look back in 7 weeks and a day and know it's done!

A question for those currently job-seeking...
C

So far I've only applied for post docs but would also apply for research assistants posts topic they intersted me. I've even seen a couple that have had Phd on the desirable criteria. Dunno how someone without a Phd but stands a chance to get on in research!
