I got a book out the library on boot strapping but still haven't got round to reading more than the first few pages. Sounds an interesting approach but I want an easy life! so have stuck to what I know.
I'd definitely stick to your guns with it. So long as you can justify it in your viva I can't see it being a problem. Do you have an opportuinity to answer the reviewers questions on approach? or was it an out right rejection of the paper.
I did at point consider using Bayesian stats but think again this has to justify itself for publication as people understand conventional stats.
The title sums it up really!
I've been waiting for ages to hear about a job application and had basically written off getting an intreview. Found out today I have one :-) but it's the day after I fly to Montreal for a conference :-(
Airline say no changes allowed to booking
HR say they'll speak to the panel to see if I can get an alternative interview date but can't promise anything.
Anyway now waiting to hear. Worried it'll get to the end of the day and then my uni is shut for Easter and I don't know about the place the interview's at.
Know I need to wait to hear and worry if I can 't change interview once I know, but wondered what others would do in this situations....
Skip conference (and lose £490 flight)
Book new one way ticket (~£400 of money I don't have but my Mum would possibly lend it to me)
Skip interview and miss out on possible post doc
Find out if I'm covered under uni travel insurance (as not got round to sorting my own yet) and whether this would pay out for date change - anyone know anything about this option?
Oh and just out of curiousity - what test is it?
I'd stick with it. If you can explain why it is better than a t-test then this should answer any queries from non-stats people in your viva. Agree with the idea of seeing a statistician too so you can add weight to your arguement.
Or could you do the t-test too then expand with the new test. Sometimes people are suspicious of non conventional tests because they wonder if it's been done because the straight forward test didn't give the answer you wanted.
I don't think what she did was so bad per se, but as soon as she realised you were annoyed about it she should have apologised and tried to make it up to you instead of sulking and making you feel even worse. I would be a bit miffed about the bed cover not being put back but wouldn't really mind a friend of a housemate using my bed (would prefer them asking though).
Anyway if you want a worse story when I was an undergraduate two of my friends had sex in my bed while I was away. I was pretty peed off at the time but am still good friends with both of them, and we can laugh about it now!
When I applied for PhDs (Psychology) I didn't have any paid research experience, so I made what I could of the research excperience I did have, so I put extra details of my BSc final year project, MSc project and other small projects completed during the courses etc.
I can't remember exactly what order I put things in but definitely started with academic qualifications, which included the main courses covered during my BSc/MSC. I also quite like starting with a personal statement highlighting who I am, what my interests are and my career aims. I tweak this slightly for each post I apply for.
I think mine ended up 2-3 pages long and it was pretty good at getting me interviews .... it just took me ages to get a PhD because I didn't interview very well!
Good luck with the applications.
I get like this on Sunny days. My main motivation to finish my thesis as soon as possible is to try and get some time off over the Summer to relax and enjoy myself. I would try and write in the garden but not sure how successful that would be (probably more sucessful than writing at the moment especially if wifi doesn't extend into the garden!)

Anyone watching it? (TV show channel 4)
I haven't found it particularly funny. Nor have I recognised much from what I know about University life....it just seems to be a bunch of idiots walking aroung talking constantly about sex!
so what did you do? I had this problem recently and just went sod it and did this particular analysis in version 16 which is still on my computer! WOUld be useful to know for future reference.
It'sd not the norm where I am, but I am bot lab based. IN my first year some chemicals were bought on my grant, they were useful for the centre in general and not specifically for my project, and my other supervisor was not happy about it though eventually agreed. There was some talk about a post doc using some of my research money for a conference and my other supervisor was very very against this and it did not happen.
I've not yet used I in the thesis and will try and avoid it (to inbuilt into me now!). I used "we" in my upgrade report and got pulled up on it as it made me sound like it was not my own work.
Does your uni have careers advice service? I pend quite a lot of time there in my final year (psychology) as I wan' sure what I wanted to do next. Mine offered 30 min talks on all sorts of careers, which gave an opportunity to ask questions and find out more.
Some of the talks I went to were:
Working in a charitable organisation
NHS management
Foreign and Commonwealth Office
Civil service fast stream
Working in media/PR
Teaching English Abroad
Postgraduate Medicine
Probably some other talks I've forgotton as I know I went to a lot of talks!
Anyway maybe think about what aspects of degree you like. If I could go back I'd possible do a medical statistics masters because I actually like the data analysis part of research best. Not really a career option if you hate stats mind!
Thanks for responses. Not sure I explained it well last night. In this analysis measure A is a within subjects measure with two factor. When I do the main effect of A it shouldn't matter if the rest of the ANOVA (the independent groups bit) is split into two groups or three groups and I am still comparing the same data withing subjects (A1 and A2).
does that make any more sense???
Anyone out there a stats guru who can help me on a question about repeated measures ANOVA?
I have a two factor repeated measure (call it A) and my data can be split into either 2 independent groups or 3 independent groups. If I run two ANOVAs - one 2(A)X2 the other 2(A)x3, I'd expect the main effect of A to give the same result on the two ANOVAs as the same data has gone in, but it doesn't. Any idea why?
I always thought the main effct of A should be the difference between the two levels of A collapsed accross groups thus it shouldn't matter how I split the data into groups
Two things come to mind, both already covered by other people....
Wish I could play an instrument really well. i had flute lessons at school, but wish I'd learned the guitar instead. I did try teaching myslef a few years ago, but I don't really have the inclincation to put the effort into practicing.....I want to be good now!
Also wish I could speak another language fluently (or near fluently) I was born in Paris and lived there til I was nearly 2. My French get me an A at GCSE but even then I couldn't actually hold a proper conversation with a French person!
