What are clichs?

And I often wear bright coloured tops.

(sprout) for somewhat original spamming! think I'm missing what it's supposed to be advertising!

Applying for a RA position while writing up.....is this a mad idea?

Meant to come bcak and say thanks for reply Sneaks. I guess it can't hurt to put in an application and see what happens. Might run it past my supervisors though, just don't know what they'll say (probably take a year off and write up properly! One keeps suggesting they might be able to pay me but just talking in vague terms when I don't think the money is there)

Please help!

Before getting my PhD I had a number of interviews for exisitng funded projects (and my current PhD falls into this category too)

Firstly what to wear....wear something fairly smart and comfortable. One interview they gave a tour to the three interviewees together. I wore a skirt, smart top and shoes, of the other two guys one was in a full suit the other combat trousers and walking boots! I don't know which got the job but it wasn't me!

In the interviews I was asked what I knew about the research area but wasn't expected to know everything. In fact any reading of the topic seemed to be viewed positively, though I did fall down in one interview where they asked me about the funding body (it was a charity) and I hadn't thought to look at their website.

As for theproject I thought it would be all mapped out, turned out it was a vague idea in the head of my lead supervisor! The advert was about all they had as a project sepcification, but I guess this varies from post to post.

Good luck with the interview. Try not to be too nervous (easy to say!)

Do I understand this correctly?

I quite like SPSS. Mainly cos i've never used anything else so don't know what I'm missing! Hate the weird bugs it gets. Thinking of upgrading from15....is 17 much different? Never seen a negative p value though!

Everyone I know who uses r raves about it, esapecially it's ability to draw better graphs, but don't you need programming skills? I'm sadly laking any of these!

I've seen an RA position that looks interesting and that I am more than qualified for. Is it a mad idea to apply while I will be writing my PhD? I know people take on postdoc when not completed but I worry I would struggle to get it written if also working.... I've always kept a good work life balance by not working too hard during PhD! (which also explains why I'm not gonna complete in 3 years!)

My funding runs out end of September and there is no way I'll be finished by then. I'm still collecting data (though should be finished by mid August) but will have a load of analysis and then a lot of writing to do. Other cons are the job is in London and I live on south coast so it would involve either commuting or liing with my Mum mid week (and away from boyfriend)

The pros are the project invoved fMRI. Although my project has involve MRI it is structural rather than functional and I hope that having functional experience would make it easier to get a post doc job in the field. Also it involves earning some money rather than getting into debt while writing up which would be good.

Just got a 1st...waiting 2 or 3 years before applying for a PHD...right way to go?

I took 4 years between getting a first and starting a PhD. I don't think it has ever disadvantaged me and I don't think I was ever asked why I didn't do it straight away. It seems even if asked you can account for why you are doing things the way you are, so I do;t think you would be disadvantaged.

What do you do in your breaks?

Clean tha house? Might actually make you want to go back to your work too!

Personally I work at uni most the time so go and have a chat with someone on my breaks, or go for a walk...usually to buy sweets which is not good. At home I tend to put the TV on and 5 mins turns to an hour!

Oh and butterscotch is the best flavour angel delight, though I havn't had it in years as my boyfriend doesn't like that sort of dessert.

Quote From catalinbond:

I don't know if there is an official way to tell how many have voted but my vote for no changed the percent from 65 to 67. I'm sure the algebra to work out votes from that isn't too hard except it's midnight!

Today I worked it out, at the time of my voting 18 (including myself) had voted with 12 votes for "no". It's about where I'd have expected it to be. Think if the poll was done in the general public the yes vote would be surpirisingly high, think a lot of people do kinda believe in god even though church attendance is pretty low.

I like Bland-Altman plots. :)

Can't think why they can only be used on parametric data though. Then again there seems to be a lot of rules around stats...think I'll be breaking a lot of them in my thesis...

Soaps - there's only one way to find out...

I voted for Eastenders as occasionally watch it and hate the other two, but really the only soap I watch is Hollyoaks. I may be nearly 30 but I love it! It is ridiculous but I reakon that's what makes it good - it doesn't take itself seriously.

Have you ever been to your supervisor's house?
C

I have three supervisors and I've been to the houses of two of them. One does a meal usually at the start of the academic year and invites all her PhD students, post doc plus partners. It's normally pretty informal and kinda fun. My other supervisor had a big 60th birthday party this year and I was invited to that, along with most the department. In both cases I was intrigued to see what their houses were like, and because there were lots of other people there it didn't seem awkward. Sitting down for a meal with just them and their family could be more awkward.

And a week away seems :$ (this forukm doesn't quite have a smiley that sums up the horror at that!)

Where to go?
C

I stayed at the same university for BSc and MSc then moved for PhD. I can't say staying harmed me chances of getting a PhD and I have/had at the time no regrets about it. It was different being a postgraduate student, but it was also nice knowing the department and the city, and meant I didn't have to move house. The reduction in fees would be good too. Personally I ccan'tsee any reason to move for the sake of moving. On the other hand if you do fancy a change or the other course is better then I''d think about moving..

I'll watch bits of it, but won't rearrange my life in order to do so. Am looking forward to watching England play on the big screen at Glastonbury festival (looking forward to the festival more...) Prob watch England match on Saturday. We also have a sweepstake at work which has given me another team to support. Unfortunately it's Ghana!

A Very Serious Plumbing Problem - [Men Only]
C

I know it's easy to say but try not to worry about it...sometime stress can affect these things, then it becomes a vicious circle of stressing about it, then making it worse and so on.
Good luck with the docs. Sure the plumbing system is too new to have major problems.
