Staying fit while doing a PhD
C

I keep fit by running. I've done it for years so was just a case of continuing throughout the PhD. This year I managed to train for my first marathon - though this did mean on occasion prioritising running over my PhD :$
Depending where you live running or walking into uni (or home from uni) is a good way to get exercise in. I also agree about it getting easier to go to the gym straight from work. You may feel tired but if you've been sitting down all day your more likely to be mentally rather than physically tired. First thing in the morning works for some people. It doesn't for me as I am so not a morning person and find I'm knackered all day but it's worth seeing what works for you.

Accomodation

I guess it kinda depends what sort of person you are. Living alone is something I've never done and it's my absolute worst nightmare so if the choice was halls or studio I'd go halls every time. Another consideration is the cost difference of sharing versus having your own place - I have a good friend who decided she wanted to live alone but now cannot afford to do anything as most of her studentship gets taken up by rent, bills etc.

When I moved to a new place to do my PhD I moved wth my boyfriend, we looked at a mixture of one bed flats and shared houses, and could get so much more with sharing. We still shared with people 2 1/2 years later and it's been great. Yes you never quite know with people before you move in, but we have had no problems and over this time have lived in 2 houses with 10 different people(all of which were complete strangers before moving in). Not all of them have turned into our best friends but they've all been fine.

anyone want to mark 10 undergraduate essays?
C

How good am I went to the gym, then went home to mark and didn't go to the pub! (well you've gotta blow your own trumpet sometimes even if it is for doing the work that needs doing rather than drinking! Next time I'm definitely doing them in the pub....though always have the fear of handing them back with red wine stains! (one of this lot does seem to have my dinner on it :$)

Essays were on hypnosis. A topic that should be interesting but somehow isn't! They had the choice of doing one on lie detectors which I think would have been way more interesting and only 1 student in the year picked it!

I'll pay ya double!

Reallly bored of them now. it's lovely outside, I've got a bit of a headache, and i want to go to the gym then the pub and NOT SIT HERE MARKING THESE (generally) NOT VERY GOOD ESSAYS!

Would you do a second PhD?
C

have thought about doing DClinPysc which is technically another PhD. Don't think I WILL do it, but I WOULD if situation transpires where it seems more of a good idea.

Ribenagirl. i think you might be thinking of the repeated measures t-test (this term doesn't quite seem right...what's it called again?!), where you are testing the difference between two scores against 0 and so check the difference between score 1 and 2 are normally distributed.

I'd test for normality for males and females spearately.
Though depending on sample size t-test and ANOVA are fairly robust and can stand up to some violations of normality (I think)

Non Lab Based Scientific PhD in Forensics - myth or reality?
C

======= Date Modified 29 May 2010 12:55:19 =======
Maybe I'm being dense here but if you have good ideas for lab based forensic projects could you not aapply for funding to cover research costs?

Other than that agree with the idea of reading lots til you find something that really interests you. I like my PhD but don't find it fascinating, and am finding motivation to finish my third year waning. Anyway I know you were asking for reccommedations of things to read to think about but I don't know a huge amount about foresics to point you in any direction. The only thing I know even avague amount is forensic psychology (which I guess wuld be non lab based) but don't know if this is the sort of thing that would interest you or follow from your previous experience.

editted to say good luck finding a topic

What cheers you up?
C

This is a good thread. I've got a good friend in need of cheering up and I was thinking today about what I could do. My friend is a recent convert to veganism and I was thinking of trying to find some vegan cake or even baking one. Dunno if this is a good idea or whether she'll feel obliged to eat cake when she doesn't want it.

Coffee and a chat often works as someone else suggested. May be looking here for more ideas though!

Absolutely terrible PhD interview
C

I've had brain freeze moments in interviews and got the job (not Phd though) In one I couldn't think what cognitive psychology consisted of! (somthing very relevant to the job and something anyone with a psychology degree should easily know)

I didn't feel my PhD interview went well, but was later told I'd been a good candidate so sometimes your percceptions are wrong.

Good luck with the result and try not to be too disheartened if you don't get it. I had 8 PhD interviews over a period of a few years before I got mine. Looking back some of the projects I'm so glad I didn;t get them!

to cite or not to cite

Could you add a little more to the quote to make it clear you got it from the primary source and haven't just copied from a secondary source? or add more to the context around it that ould only come from the primary one?

Otherwise stick to using the primary source, this is where you got it from, and unless someone is very familiar with the book chapter they wouldn't know the same quote was used.

I have a feeling that that moment may be the scariest hour of my life so far. Hope all went well. I've been putting off thoughts of my viva for the last 2 1/2 year but am going to have to face it soon.

Stats help? Pleeeeeassse?
C

Most papers I read don't seem to bother with bonferroni corrections (even if a statistician would argue they should) so I'd try and get away with doing as few as possible! If you can argue that the positive and negative are independent then you could do each divided by 5 for 5 t-tests in each set ie p of 0.01 (I think but could be wrong)

Bank Holidays

I voted yes. But then I'm pretty lazy and look for any excuse!
This time howevr I have a whole load of marking to do and may put aside sometime monday for it/

Interesting observation...
C

I can do Wally's test and I can lift my ring ringer about 1cm on the right hand and 0 cm on left for Teek's.

I used to play piano and flute and used to do some excersizes to help move fingers independently. Dunno if these have anything to do with it.
