Other peoples PhDs
C

I often find everyone elses (well within my field, I couldn't be doing with a lab based project for example (sorry any lab people)) seem much more interesting. My good friend started at the same time as me and i saw her PhD advertised and would have applied if I hadn't just got mine, anyway I quite often get PhD envy of hers! and sometimes think thank god Im not doing that! ANyway I'm sure it's a grass is always greener thing as people often tell me how interesting my PhD sound... I'm always like really?!

The Great Star Appeal
C

It's only through this thread that I've figured out what the star thing even means! which means any thread i started i haven't ever starred anyone. Guess that's what must have happened to me too......eithr that or i don't give out much good advice!

demanding undergraduate students
C

I don't know if undergraduates are any more rude but think they are more demanding. When I worked in an academic dept pre PhD it was generally accepted that the students had got more demanding and expected more since they had to pay tuition fees. I guess they see it as something they're buying so they want to demand as much as they can for their money.

What bugs me the most is the way student expect all groups to be exactly the same and start moaning that their friend in the other seminar group got to do xyz or got more help than they got and blah blah blah moan moan moan! They don't seem to understand that the tutors plan their own seminars rather than working off a centrally agreed crib sheet and everyone has slightly different styles etc. This especially bugs me as we get very little guidance on what we're actually meant to be covering in seminars as tutors but that's another thread as it isn't really the students fault.

finding a job
C

HI, I recently went on a postgraduate away day type thing where they gave us a whole load of talks about what to do post PhD. What really interested me was how varied people's paths had been and how some had gone away from academia and back into it later so I definitely think it's possible. (this was psychology btw) We also had two people working in medical writing talk to us. They made it sound a very interesting and varied job and seemed quite well paid. If you've been offered the job can't you find out more through them?

snacking
C

Do you work at UNi or at home? I find it helps not to snack if I simply do not have food by my desk (at uni). Not so easy if at home however. Other than Fruit is a good snack. PLus I find having things I don't really like by my computer reduces snacking. Crisps were a big problem for me. Now I get bombay mix. It still is salty (what I tend to want when snakcing) but isn't as nice so I don't eat the whole packet at once!

Time spent in the office?
C

I'm just not disciplined enought to work from home. If I stay home I find myself watching daytime TV with a journal article on my lap! I think if you work better at home it's better to do that. Why do you need to be accessible to the faculty?

endnote-? author initials
C

Further to what sneaks wrote, even if the authors look the same in endnote (i.e John, AB and John, AB ) sometimes there can be a space inserted after the initials and endnote treats this as a separate author too! took me ages to figure that one out. The cutting and pasting method suggested by sneaks would work equally well in this situation, just thought I'd post it incase anyone has a problem and when checking endnote can't see any differences in how it is inputted.

Summer Break from thesis: Camping suggestions
C

I'm off to the lakedistrict in a couple of weeks for a camping thesis break. Lots of campsites and very beaautiful. Only problem is you can't guarzntee the weather.... I've been before when it's rained all week.

Just submitted first conference abstract....
C

What a complex procedure, taken me nearly two hours to input all the information! Now feel slightly scared I've put something in wrong as nothing can be changed after today.

Anyway just thought I's share that as there seems to be no one about.
Off for a celebratory cup of tea!

Research Project on Supervisors - I need your help!
C

My only real issue witih supervisors is getting to see them. My lead sup is a consultant in the NHS, head of research, involved in R&D in the trust and various other things. Consequently he's hard to pin down.

First year report - future work
C

I did my future work section as a one page flow chart, with rough headings of what I planned to do and rough dates.
I copied this idea of someone who had passed they year before, and it was fine for mine too.

Vent about passive agressive supervisor
C

I don't quite understand why you think the comments made by this other women relate to you and your supervisor. Maybe she was having a moan about her own students who are taking up her time.

Anyway I don't think you should raise it with your supervisor. If you are happy meeting weekly, and she seems happy meeting weekly then stick with that. It's not like a weekly meeting is taking up all her time.

very easy stats / SPSS question
C

on first glance this looks to me like you'd use a chi sqaured but it kinda depends on what type of data this is. What are the numbers? it reads like it's the number of times they''ve chosen an option (A or B)but are they measurements of some kind?
do you just have two participants or is there other unshown data?

sorry lots of questions!

Is it normal?
C

Yep I sometimes go on the advertising sites and look at other PhDs and think wow that sounds so much better than what I'm doing! I also listen to (some) other people's PhD and think they sound more interesting.

Perhaps a more telling question, is whether you'd still do your PhD knowing what you know now? I don't think I would (though that doesn't mean I'm gonna quit or not put my effort in, more I'll look towards a slightly differnt field afterwards)

Working in MS Word in two languages...how?
C

The only thing I can think of is to insert a section break before each change of language, and then change the default language setting in each section. It seems to work when I tried it once, but it could end up confusing the whole document if you did it multiple times, which you would need to if you keep going between two languages.
