Surviving a PhD

Me and my partner have a mortgage together and split everything 50/50 except his car, and he spends more on going out e.g. meals drinks together

Changing name - how did you get yours?

2 amber stars and a meadowseet ranger. They're all hybrids.

It's a shame your parents would actually name a boy Claudia
(Sorry poor attempt at humour).
CC is short for chocchick my username on poultry forums (no really I own pet chickens).
404 (did I remember that right), that is shockingly geeky (athough see comment above *embarrassed emoticon*)

Flirting

Does hot mean crusty with socks and sandals? Is it some kind of fetish? :-?

Can somebody please tell me what's going on...

ditched that and moved onto structural tightening in enzymes

Give her a break, it was only a joke!

hyper_chicken: are you a chicken fan? I keep pet chickens...

fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail

You can have minor or major corrections to send to the external, it is common (in my lab anyway) to get minor corrections.

scared about supervisors sanity
C

My supervisor didn't know much about my first project, and told me recently he wasn't interested in it. It was a collaboration with another department but sadly that prof was never around. I think it's normal.

zero interest and motivation

I haven't been in work all week. I'm in my 3rd year hate it, I'm fed up with my supervisor and want to leave. I can't find any motivation at all

Drop Out Rates
C

From my experience in Science it is low-if a certain % don't complete the department doesn't get funding so it is closely monitored. I don't know anyone who has failed, as theoretically if they have submitted their (experienced) supervisor has approved their thesis. Corrections are common. Also there is the option to drop out after the 1st year and do an MPhil, someone in my lab did that.

how many publications do you have?
C

I wish I had just a mention on one paper, I wrote a communication for a professor-he said he was going to get some more results and is flaky so hasn't. I'm hoping I will get one for my second project.

Thinking of "sacking" my supervisor
C

Surely you don't have to actually sack a supervisor to just get one person to read a thesis. It is your thesis in the end. If anything like my supervisor he will be happy of any excuse not to read it! Academics do seem to run on a slow timescale and not by deadlines so much, so maybe you just have to accept it will take longer than you anticipated?

I'm amazed you can be supervised by someone without a PhD! Is it a CS thing, maybe you need a better supervisor!
In our dept. if you're not a teaching academic you struggle to be a supervisor. There are 2 supervisors with 10+ years experience in our lab who struggle to even get teaching time. One has only just been allowed her "own" student, not jointly supervised.

I'm pissed out of my face
C

I have found most people in my lab are binge drinkers, and it's hard not to drink too much and still socialise with them (I only drink a bit). I think there is a culture for getting really pissed amongst PhDs, probably because of the pressure.
It is amusing when people in my lab sleep together when drunk though
