Hugh, are you using a particular style guide? I am using APA style and have been advised to be really careful with things like '&', as my supervisor has seen people picked up on that in viva! It seems terribly nit-picky to me, but apparently there are some style guide freaks who will look specifically at these tiny details!

I'm not using a particular style guide, no. If each heading doesn't fit on one line, its just not as easy to follow. Maybe I'll ask my supervisors

Yeah, probably one to run past your supervisors. If there's no style guide, it's probably not a problem as long as you use it consistently - I know what you mean about it being easier to navigate if you get things on one line.

Proof reading is the worst! Good luck with it all, at least you can take that outside with you and enjoy the sunshine! Well, if you're terrible like me and print it out haha. I just don't spot typos on the screen so sort of had to. Double sided and four pages on each sheet though to minimise the damage!

I'm just waiting for my viva date now. It'll be a month on Monday since I submitted and nothing, I wonder if this is normal...

Hope you get your date through soon! It can't be nice waiting for it to come through.

A question: do you think its OK to use '&' instead of 'and' in headings? Some of my headings in the contents page are going on double lines and its harder to follow.

Yes, chapters are drafted. I'm hoping to have a full draft ready by the end of this month. I'm stuck on formatting though. It's driving me a bit mad!

How are you coming along?

That's brilliant that your chapters are drafted! I have two in production just now - both are data chapters - and then there is the discussion/conclusion to write. Hoping for a full draft by the end of Sept.

How are you getting on this week? I am ultra-tired and think I may switch to job applications for a change of pace!

I'm feeling really run down this week too. I need a long holiday before focusing on formatting, it feels like such a pain.

I've just spent the morning trying to sort out my appendices. Still not completely done yet.

I've not gone near appendices yet - I have this vague dread they are going to be bigger than my thesis! Are all your chapters drafted now?

See, I love two spaces after a full stop. My mum was a secretary and taught me that :)

Seems to be one of those 'love it or loathe it' things - I have met others who think it's the proper way to type :)

We have to use Times New Roman, size 12, and put two spaces after every full stop. I am gutted and am leaving the formatting til the end, as I can't stand working with it looking like that!

Gosh that does sound awful! :(

The 'two spaces after every full stop' thing is particularly annoying. I think it's a throwback from days when theses were typed and it improved readability, but with most modern fonts it makes no sense.

Thesis font dilemma - help please!
C

I would be inclined to stick to the same font throughout.

Oh, I'm using APA style and had not come across that stats gem yet - how silly it looks with all those spaces too! Thank you for the heads up on that.

At least you are applying for it now, Hugh - imagine how frustrating it would be if it was your dream job and you'd applied in March!

I would join too!

Anyone else doing their corrections?

I'd definitely ask for help with the stats, since you and your supervisors thought they were ok but the internal was picky. Maybe your supervisors can recommend someone in the dept who can help?

Winters in Glasgow: generally milder than you'd think up until December, colder in January/February. People do tend to think we get a lot of rain here - I don't notice that so much as I've lived here most of my life. You won't get many problems in the city with snow etc - it's a fairly rare occurrence and the city centre gets cleared quickly.

While I'm not that familiar with the Strathclyde campus, it is central to Glasgow and you'd have access to all the resources you'd expect in a major city. I wouldn't see that as much of a drawback.
