Done - good luck!

That's a horrific number of applications!

I'm still looking at both academic and non-academic posts. There is absolutely no way I want to go down the road of competing for one six month academic contract after another, all in different places, so I am really just keeping an eye on anything interesting that's within reach of where I live, and looking at other jobs too.

Zutterfly, good luck with your surgery! Definitely take time off, you will need it.

Chickpea, sorry to hear your week hasn't been as productive. Mine hasn't either. I don't know if its the heat, or the fact that I've had household stuff to sort out. I'm hoping tomorrow will be much more productive for you and me, and we can get down to work!

Thanks, Hugh - hope tomorrow is a better one!

Hope your surgery goes well, Zutterfly, and definitely a good idea to plan some time off around it.

I thought I would have a very productive week as my partner is away on a trip and I had visions of extending my working hours etc. However it is turning out to be one of those horrible weeks when everything goes wrong and needs sorted at home! What about you?

I'm planning to submit by the end of the year. My funding runs out at the end of September, so I'm hoping to have a full draft by then, and (fingers crossed) pick up some work while continuing to edit and tidy up all the other bits and bobs (appendices, refs....the list goes on!).

I've got a very similar plan too! Hoping to submit first full draft before the end of Sep, Make changes and proofread in Nov, & submit in Dec. We will make it :)

Yeah, let's not have it hanging over us at Christmas/New Year :-)

I wish I could write concisely! :)

All my chapters are written up as first drafts, but half of them haven't been checked by my supervisor yet, so there's still plenty of changes to make, and loads to do. I also have 3 other chapters that need editing. So its no where near a first full draft quite yet. My supervisor is also away for most of Aug/Sep, and I wasn't expecting that, so things are sadly going to move much slower than I anticipated! But I am still pushing for a 2016 submission.

How about you? When do you plan to submit?

Sorry your supervisor's going to be away so much - another of these uncontrollable things that makes the whole process so difficult to plan for.

Are all your chapters written, Hugh? I've got about 50,000 words now but with 2 or 3 chapters still to write. I'm not expecting to go up to the maximum word count, as I tend to have the opposite issue and write a bit too concisely! I'm thinking that when it's all put together for editing, there will be obvious areas of repetition and stuff that can come out.

Hopefully Milo got his/her essay done four years ago and won't need to cheat by paying someone to do it :)

Another week, another chapter :) What about you, Hugh?

Sounds good. Another short chapter here too! Thinking of writing the thesis abstract too in the next two weeks so there is plenty to do!

That's exciting, being at the stage of writing an abstract! It feels odd writing short chapters, after writing a 20k one. They feel very flimsy!

What's a coding framework? Have you both used a type of analysis that requires this, or is this something that a thesis should have and that I've never heard of? Eek!

It's based on type of analysis - not required by default. Don't worry.

Thanks Hugh - I thought that would be the case, but you never know :o)

Over-sensitive supervisor

I tend to do the same as you, Tudor_Queen, and raise stuff so that it can be sorted. I have found over the years, though, that this just makes some people deeply uncomfortable and they will go to any lengths to shut the conversation back up without anything being resolved. As much as it makes me uncomfortable doing this, I am gradually learning that some people just don't feel comfortable with open, frank styles. I think in a supervisor-supervisee setting, with the power imbalance that you mention, I would probably find a way to work with her preferences, even if it meant stuffing my fist in my mouth at times!

Feel bullied in Postdoc
C

I have had a bully of a manager in a (non-academic) job before and I lined up another job, left the one with the bully and put in a complaint. Don't over-think it - your future self won't thank you for staying with a bully!

Sounds like quite an awkward situation. How involved is your supervisor with your research design - was the project one that they suggested initially? Is he/she an expert in your field (rather than just having some research interests in common)? I'm just wondering if they feel threatened in some way by your ideas departing from theirs - could be a case for trying to manage someone's ego!
