PhD poster
C

From my experience of doing a poster presentation, I don't think it matters if you don't have a set of perfect data for the poster (I had to do mine with only pilot test information, as that was all I had at the time). I think if you can talk to people about your ideas and the work is still ongoing, that is fine.

Dissertation Survey Urgency

Done! Nice and short.

Completed MPhil ^_^

Congratulations!

The thought of my PhD confirmation review is killing me! Please read & advice me!

Your supervisor's advice doesn't sound very constructive. Is it worth asking for a meeting to discuss specifically the things she thinks you need to work on for your review? Maybe your second supervisor would be available to meet as well? At the minute it sounds like she is being very anxious and this is affecting you.

Supervisor as a co-author
C

I think including her works both ways - she gets her name on another publication, and you get her feedback and her more established name on your paper, as well as keeping her on side for a good reference. I can't see any good reason not to include her.

Are you including supervisors as co-authors and if so, can they get access to the journals for you? Have you looked at things like the OU associate tutor jobs? I hope you find something soon.

PhD and mortgage
C

I think that with so many people on fixed term contracts or in insecure jobs now, it is a little short-sighted of banks to automatically rule out PhD studentships, rather than looking at the cases individually. It doesn't surprise me though.

I've had my mortgage for 15 years, and have never missed a payment. In that time I've had periods of unemployment, zero-hour contracts etc. A couple of years ago, I wanted to move to a new place with my partner, so I approached the bank about transferring my existing mortgage towards the new place (it says I can do that in the terms of my mortgage). They explained that if I changed address, they would treat me as a new customer and would decline me, as I did not have a permanent contract at that time. Yet they were quite happy for me to walk out of the door with my mortgage intact, as long as I stayed in the same flat!

Need British participants for a short survey for my PhD

Hmmm now I'm intrigued!

I think as you've said that it's difficult for lots of people to get postdoc or research work these days - I've known people of various ages who submitted a lot of applications before they got any interviews. Is there no chance of getting a bit of teaching work at the uni you were attached to in the mean time, to keep up your connection? It's quite an achievement to be able to pick up from where you left off 25 years ago with your PhD, and I hope you're not too disheartened with the job situation!

Need British participants for a short survey for my PhD
C

I got to the point of reading the fairly long article and then the survey crashed and wouldn't let me continue, which was frustrating. I would have been interested to see how it finished - I was asked to compare being British (obviously a national identity) with being Muslim (religious identity) and I'm honestly not sure what conclusions you could draw from that sort of comparison, as a religion by its very nature means that the people who follow that religion have certain things in common.

any advice on my first conference
C

It would depend on the type of question, but I might just acknowledge that it was an interesting question and that it was something I hadn't come across yet, or invite them to talk to you afterwards if it's something that would need a longer discussion (or if you needed some thinking time first!)

European PhD students and UK referendum
C

These things work very slowly. I agree with TreeofLife and doubt we will vote to leave the EU, but even if the vote went that way, it would take years to actually sort it out.

Presentation of qualiative data
C

Which type of qualitative research are you doing, and how are you presenting your findings? In both the qualitative methods I've used (IPA and critical discursive psychology) it would be ok to use phrases like, 'several participants mentioned X' or 'X was a theme discussed by most of the participants', and these statements would then be followed up with quotes from the transcripts. It might help to look at some published papers that have used whichever approach you're using?

VIVA PASSED with no corrections: a few tips :)
C

Congratulations and thank you for sharing some of your experiences - very helpful!

Can you refuse some revisions after viva?
C

It hasn't been invalidated, though. You've passed on the strength of your work and you now need to jump through an annoying hoop as you said, to pick up the credit for it. I'm afraid academia is not a field in which many people retain complete 'artistic control', certainly not at PhD level!
