Yes, it will feel good to submit and have some time away from editing! Hope you are celebrating this stage!

Congratulations on submitting, PracticalMouse! My thesis should be done in the next week or so, but uni is busy doing bureaucratic things so I haven't been given the go-ahead to submit, ho ho. At least it will be done though!

Examiner Disagreement

Congratulations! I'm so pleased to hear this news. I almost feel we need to have a forum party now!

Good luck, PracticalMouse - nearly there!

Can someone grab this paper for me?
C

I would have thought that the journal would give you access, since you're an author? I've only got limited experience of being published, but have been sent links to papers I'm on so that I can share them with others - is it possible to request this from the journal?

Quote From Kikima:

I used to run, but since December I am sitting and trying just to finish this thing but finally this week I began to walk again for long distances to gain back my fitness. I think walking is going to make me feel better. I now have the first three chapters with my supervisor's comment's on it, and a few days to finish it. I began to dig into editing again. It feels like he put the same immense amount of comments, but for a reason this time I can do more of it less time, which makes me feel good. Only interesting thing I am making spelling mistakes in both my native language and in English since last week, which I never did to this extent before. I think it is tiredness. But well grammar checkers are for this, right? Well, I better go back to work because my final ever deadline (if I want to graduate this June) is Wednesday, and my supervisor is going to give the rest of it tomorrow, I better be done with the part I have today. Will let you know how that goes. I hope it will go well for you too.

Good luck with your edits, Kikima! I am making mistakes too, and English is my only language - I do think you get to the stage where you are so tired you stop noticing things.

I was hoping to graduate in summer too, but my university has made a bureaucratic decision which means I am likely to be delayed now. I don't want to say too much here about what exactly happened, but my thesis is nearly ready yet the university decision means I cannot now make the deadlines - very frustrating!

Quote From Pjlu:

Currently going back through masses of data to ensure every last tiny illustrative quote embedded in the chapter sections between frequency tables and text discussion is attributed to the specific student from the entire sample of 178. Somewhat stupidly, I have done everything the old fashioned way-coloured texts, post its, crafted tables and simple excel frequency tables and data (chief supervisor is happy with this process) but I really wish now that I hadn't. I'm posting I think as a warning...or just because...needless to say my timeline for chapter edits is a week or two overdue. Sometimes you can push through and sometimes I think you just have to go with the flow.

Blimey, Pjlu, that's some sample size! Good luck with that. I know what you mean about setting a timeline and then finding it doesn't work when real life comes along - can't remember the last time I actually looked at my completion timeline!

Best platform for poster

I used Powerpoint, and used one of my supervisor's posters as a starting template.

I agree with Pjlu - I think you may have to make a conscious effort to do things that will benefit you. I am also guilty of narrowing my focus to either doing the PhD or doing unproductive/unhealthy things like eating rubbish and idling online. It takes an effort to remember to do the stuff that will actually help. This period will be over soon, though, and after a period of readjustment, I'm sure we will all get back into better routines :-)

If you are one of the authors named on the paper, then could you contact the journal and get a link to it? Maybe that's your plan B!

It won't let me get it either, sorry - my uni is listed as having access but then it still wants me to pay for the article.

Feeling really embarrased after bad interview and have to see panel again
C

Try not to worry too much about it. Since they know you, they may just think you were nervous, which can happen to anyone on the day. Also, there is a chance that they were being a bit tough and putting you on the spot, which can happen in postgraduate interviews, as they want to see if you can defend your own work. This happened at my PhD interview and I thought I had done badly, and was then offered the place!

Starting PhD when I might be going to prison during?
C

It might help, in case anyone does google you while you're doing your PhD, to set up things like a LinkedIn page and Twitter account in your own name. Those things appear right at the start of google searches, and will give you an online presence connected with being a PhD student rather than anything else.

Re-developing the research proposal
C

Hi Tudor

I don't know if this helps, but mine changed a lot once I got started and, rather than doing various studies in a linear way as I had first planned, I ended up delving more into some of the 'interesting' things that were coming up, and my thesis took a much more qualitative, exploratory focus. I think the main thing is that you end up with a narrative based on your data. Is there a possibility that some of your results lead on naturally to looking at something in more depth, for example?

Best wishes with it all - you might feel stuck or uncertain for a bit, but you will work it out.

Supervisors and feedback

You should notice a change in the type of feedback you get as you go through the process. It never stops, though!
