presenting papers: help/advice!

Williamson! Bye Bye Maths tower!

I am in CHSTM on the top floor of Simons, and when I said Lime Grove (School of Arts Histories and Cultures) I should have been more specific: Bridgeford Street. Sheesh...campus politics post-merger have meant rebranding everywhere...what happened to the old title 'School of Art History and Archaeology'!

I'm researching early natural history collections and menageries. You?

LSE admission please help!!

My undergraduate university was position fifty. My MA (now doing PhD at the same uni) was at a uni now 15th. It is possbile to climb, but it does help if you were in a good department in your 'low ranked' (these rankings can be soooo subjective) university. So yeah, go for it and good luck!

econometrics - help

hej!

Since I was avoiding any possiblity of getting on with work, I thought I would do a google search: LSE have PDF files relating to an econmetrics course they do. Course guides, worksheets and stuff. Follow this link: http://econ.lse.ac.uk/ie/iecourse/sg/

Also...good luck on your paper. I was going to also do a presentation of my research project...I figured it would be relevant to the lit review, keep me on track, and not involve extraneous research on stuff not relevant to study.

No, mine will be in Durham in Jan.

What department/buildings are you at/in Manchester? I'm split between the Lime Grove Building and Simons buildings (off Oxford Road). Isn't it great being a postgrad in Manchester?!

What do people do to stop themselves piling on the pounds?

Thanks guys! Yeah, I think I'll give it a go. The abstract will help my get to grips with the lit review. And it might even be accepted!

Anywho....at the current momment I am staring at a blank screen waiting for some rsearch questions for a meeting with my supervisor to pop out!

I am in my first term, my supervisor has draw a postgraduate conference to my attention and I'm thinking of perhaps submitting an abstract. I have a month to put a 300 word abstract together. Hmm I don't know what I would do it on, but perhaps the process of writing an abstract would structure my first term and kind of help with the literature review. What are other peoples experiences of papers?

Hej!

Du kommer från Sverige? Jag är lära sig svensk och ska resa till Sverige igen snart!

Stockholm är fantastiskt och vackert! When I finish my PhD I'm going to try and spend some time there....I have three years to go so with hope I'll be much better at Swedish by then.

Hej då

National Insurance Shortfall
C

Urm, I filed mine away too figuring that the £300 odd pound I was asked for I will never see again anyway! Like state pensions will still exist when I want to draw in fifty years time! And if they do I will be getting like £1 anyway!

Seriously, I am annoyed to have got that letter too though: I have worked every holiday during undergrad and virtually full time through my MA and will be doing the same through my PhD. 'Shortfall' assumes I've just been loafing or not working! No fair!

Well, yeah, I did a MA staight after my BA and then spent a year in call centres and retail working on my PhD proposal (hell...esp selllig insurance!). I get out and have fun though! But most of the PhD people I meet who I meant are from outside my subject....come on fellow museologists......where are you?! I've only met one, and they don't even live in Manchester

I'm 23 and feel like a grouchy old man.

Spending more time in the library without money in your wallet/purse and arriving home too late to cook should solve some problems. In the short term. Mostly, I start to fantasise about food and end up going home to gorge. Still, my metabolism is starting to crash and I'm having to watch things more. I've started to comfort eat already, so if I want to fit into my clothes in a months time I shall have to calm it down a bit!

work and study

Hej!

Thank you for your advice, both of you. It is always good to hear about other peoples time management tips. I think I'll plan my PhD every week i.e journal articles and chapters to read, and I can always use my breaks to eat lunch and work. Today I've made my evening meal in a lunch box and will be burning the oil in law library (not my PhD area, but with huge sash windows, massive desks and quiet mega stressed law students it is the perfect working environment!) I admire those who manage to do a PhD with family. I know I would find that VERY hard.

I'm so thrilled to have my full time fees paid, but still need to work for all my living costs. Luckily I will start a job in the university library and be close to resources and can get straight to academic work after work...I'm going to bring my dinner in a packed lunch box and fork it in amongst the stacks! lol

Seriously though any top tips for time management when your time is at a mega premium?

I know working several days a week is going to tough, but there is no other option other than to reject the university studentship and do it over six years. Som can anyone comfort me and tell me they know someone who has worked and studied at the same time?

I suppose I'm lucky in that I don't have a relationship or kids, and my friends understand (and some have been through) the whole PhD routine...though all with full funding (damn those science subjects!)
