Up trying to finish corrections to an essay due with the editor tmrw morning. eeeek. The publisher is demanding "plain English", which is obviously a problem when it is supposed to be an academic text in the first place! sigh!

toothache driving me crazy!!!!!!!

Hmm, I hadn't thought about it being my sinuses - probably not in this case.

With the medication I am fine right now. A bit of a fuggy head, but fine otherwise. Fine enough to write.

I think maybe it is partially stress related to thesis + unemployment + temp work all in one fatal dosage! But there must be someting physiologically there to make the pain so acute..

Urgh, I hate toothaches.

I hope your gum recession is treated soon yellowtreble.

Corrections - how long did you wait?

Congratulations!!!:p(up)

Thanks Wally. Yes, I shan't exceed the limits. (from your description, I'm guessing you are a pharmacology or chemistry PhD?)

And yes, even though I have been taken on as a fee-paying NHS patient, I am lucky that even these spaces were available, especially in a large city.

Yes, a carefully chosen card that is warm but still professionallty respectful would be well-recieved.

Quote From algaequeen:

lol hi everyone, wally thanks very much for the award, I have been informed I have a certain style of writing but I'm not sure how it's that different from anyone elses but I will gladly accept any award you give me! hopefully it helps in a good way! :-) ....although I'm not sure how something can help in a bad way, except tough love I suppose, but I digress!

I agree wholeheartedly with all the awards mentioned below, and I would like to include chrisrolinksi in the 'it sucks but I'm doing it anyway' award, for combining the phd with living abroad for the final year, long distance relationships, job hunting, article writing and what is apparently now a tooth ache, and for keeping positive the whole way through, dispensing lovely words and advice! :-)

Aww, thank you. That is very kind. I am a co-condimol induced warm haze of fuziness now! I wouldn't say I was positive, although maybe I am since IT WILL BE OVER SOON! It WILL (my mantra)

Thank you for all the posts - following the mention of co-codomal I went to the pharmacy and got some. I had been feverish all morning, but slept like a baby this afternoon (thank you co-codomal!) and woke about an hour ago with a slight headache but no tooth pain!

I had braces between the age of 16 and 20 and this gave me straight teeth but a slew of problems includin trigemninal neuralgia. I haven't had it for years - and think that the current problem is either dental or stress induced. I do worry about my enamel however, it has got rather thin the last few years and is almost translucent in points. I rarely ever eat sweets and never have fizzy pop - so I think it might be the acidity from all the tea I drink (10-12 cups a day). I have had none today. I suspect that too I am a grinder. I will see what the dentist says.

Anyway, I feel much better for the co-codomal and can actually eat and drink and sleep!

Tmrw I might actually get some work done! And then on Wednesday, the dentists drill!

I don't understand, I brush and floss, and still...ouch. Can't even tell what tooth/teeth it is. Just general ache. Got three hours sleep last night. I am so doped on Nurofen etc it isn't even working anymore...

**** it hurts so much! :( I can barely sleep, drink, eat, or think yet alone write...

At least I managed to get an appointment for Weds morning.

Could have done without paying for dental treatment (even with the NHS it will be expensive, for a student)....still worth paying so I can think straight again....

I really need to write. I just can't....might try and sleep and see if I wake up feeling a bit better.

Been asked to co-author a paper
C

I think it is worth taking on the paper, if you possibly can, since every paper will count when it comes to postdoc or academic job hunting. And once the thesis is done, it maybe be harder to get opportunities like this.

My humanities thesis has taken, so far, 3 years and 8 months. Yes, finishing in 3 years would have been great. But as it stands I will have 3 papers and 1 book chapter (which I am doing the torturous corrections for now, distracting me from thesis!) which is supposedly going to help me on the job market (it hasn't so far). Eitherway, meh - get as much as you can into print without going insane.

PS: I have gone insane.

Are you bored? Fancy doing (yet another) online survey?!!
C

Good luck. I completed it and hope you get the volume of responses you need.

Should you buy your supervisor a present at the end?
C

Having a supervised student pass should be enough for a supervisor. I think a present is unneccesary, it anything they should be buying you a drink!

A nicely handwritten tasteful card a few days after the viva might be a nice touch - as well as a personal copy of your thesis for their bookcase (which many people give their supervisor of a matter of course - turn it into a present gesture!). I think that is a nice professional gesture of gratitude. Perhaps write a nice handwritten note on the cover of the thesis.

Unless you really can, it seems unneccesary to spend worry and money on a present.

mother's day
C

Just a card. I sometimes send my mother flowers on her birthday - but other then that it is rarely more then a card. If I see the parents are Christmas I will bring a present. Myself and my siblings rarely if ever send each other cards and certainly not presents. My parents have always told me to save my money and not bother buying them things because we would be embarassed not to. They would hate to see their children spend money they don't have on things. Also, because we rarely see each other none of us no what we really like anyway, so anything more then a card is a real problem.

But then, we aren't a close family so it might be different for others. I do think however that for mother's day a card is enough.

You got to do what you got to do to get your PhD

I require tea, constant high quality tea in a huge mug. It is the same mug that I have had since I was an undergraduate. No other mug will do. I have spent so many all-nighters, bad times, and good times with that mug. I must have my thesis tea in it.

I am a sad individual who will retire the mug when I finish. And get my teeth whitened to remove the tea tanins. ;-)

Edit: I just worked out that the mug is...6.5 years old.

time is up, money is dowwwwn - argh!

Almost done with the introduction. Has taken ages.

Had two ominous nose bleeds today (ick) but it looks like I have managed to sort out some temporary casual work to see me through for a bit.

Hoping to get the thesis done soon!
