Accounting for PhD on CV
C

At only 3 months in I would just leave it off. Since you are applying for grad. jobs with only a short employment gap (presumably September after your MA) that won't look odd in this economy, you could leave it off. This would leave them to concentrate on your excellent MA and other skills, rather then wonder what made you leave your PhD and what this might "mean" for your "sticking power" etc etc. besides, without any actual research or papers in 4 months (I assume, no offence) you can hardly claim anything...

good luck! :)

Sorry to be a voice of sobriety, but I would not get too over excited about the PI's email or try and read intentions into it. Just this month I fact I had a similar situation, the professor seemed interested in my work and encouraged me to apply, and I didn't even get an interview. I also couldn't help noticing that two doctoral students at the institution were completing PhD's in the same area as the job post. So the "job" post wasn't really that at all since I had all the credentials on paper and satisfied the usual HR job description boxes - yet no interview.

So really, take it as it goes and don't try and read into what might just be a polite professional email.

After the PhD: where are the jobs?
C

I wish I knew. As my office mate regularly says (they are a postdoc): Me (frequent moan muttered into the office air...) "I need a job" They: "There are no jobs". I've seen precious little on the usual search websites or round-robin emails. There isn't much out there and it is frankly a scary and dispiriting time to be writing up my PhD near to completion.

(robin) (meant to represent a round-robin email, I couldn't resist).

I am doing the changes to the print proof the journal editor has send me, they have messed up the footnotes (sigh) so a long night. but, yay, almost done, and it looks weird as a proper article ;)

So bad I'm having thoughts of death!
C

helen! I am in a similar stage to you - have to hand in in March and need to send a copy to my sups in mid to late Jan so that they can comment in time. If you fancy a writing partner or motivational daily message or check in to help you along, I would like that. Bets of luck! We can do it! 8 weeks for the win! :)

(and I have dreamed that if I died I would not need to complete it too!):$

Starting back after Xmas

Have returned overseas back to my institute and the SNOW!!!! deep snow! so distracting, have never seen a capital city covered in 6 inches of snow before - and plus everything is functioning like it is perfectly normal, which it is, but weird... must crack on with work. 8 WEEKS TO COMPLETE THESIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!(snowman)

Goals for next year?
C

Complete and defend thesis by April or May 2010 after handing in in March. Graduate in July 2010. Find a job. Gain back weight I have lost in past few years, especially recently. Size small clothes hanging off so I look like a giant scarecrow :(

Christmas Card Etiquette
C

I have been given a card but my sup and another PhD student in my department, but it never ever occurs to me to send cards. I just don't really hold Christmas in a special status and only really buy a small token present for the boyfriend because I don't have much money. (gift)

fingers crossed!!!

It is 01:46 and I just finished and sent my application for a postdoc overseas. I really think it is a good proposal so hoping! (took long enough to come up with the idea!) This is one of the few postdocs in my field so there will be loads of applications and it will be a bloodbath!! I alone know of three other people applying in my department alone! Eeek.

Happy thoughts, Christmas robins and happiness! (robin)(snowman)(tree)(gift)(sprout)(mince)

Anybody else waiting on postdoc applications? I find out in Jan or Feb.
