Thanks for all your help. I followed the instructions for compressing and it did, but the smallest I could get it was 40MB which is too way big for my sups inbox without making him angry! In fact it wouldn't even allow me to add it as an attachment. Instead I just removed the 3 offending high resolution images and will have to find a way of compressing those when it comes to addind them to the document and printing it in a few months.

Thanks for all your helpful replies! I am formatting the footnotes now, and will attempt this in a couple of hours. I shall report back as to which technique worked! :)

I am using a MAC at the office to finish off a chapter due either this evening or early tmrw morning. It is a huge document, around 70 pages, and has pictures so it needs to be made smaller. I would normally use WINZIP, but I can't find it on this MAC..... can any Mac users guide me through the process of shrinking a file size? or guide me to somewhere I might be able to find out on the internet. not having much luck with help sites because I am unsure of mac terminology...

Would it strike you as odd if most chapters in a thesis were 12-13,000 words long, and one other was 18,000-19,00?

There is just no way this chapter can be split and at this late stage in the game (3 mths to submission) I really don't want to be thinking up a new structure....

Are you chapters balanced or inbalanced?

I would just email it. Most people mean "by email" when they talk about sending things anyway these days, and besides as a head of department, he will be checking his email regularly and appreciate the ease at which he can just print your copy out....

If you don't expect to go into academia (sadly neither do I, the jobs just aren't there, but I will try) couldn't you look at this as a final opportunity to write up something with your supervisor before you move-on? If it only added a bit or so on to your schedule as a second author (being able to take a bit of aback seat) then might it be worth it? Of course you might be wanting to publish things as an independent scholar in the future....

I was able to recently write something for my supervisors forthcoming edited collected book which was a nice project to bring my thesis to the (almost!!!) final close which felt nice - though luckily I am able to use this as a chapter in my thesis which I am writing now.
