Well done!!! That is some good advice actually, there are a few jobs recently that I haven't applied for because of thinking that I wouldn't get them - maybe I should have!

Yeah, send those applications in, someone has to get the jobs and it may as well be you! :-)

I applied for a six month fellowship (funds to complete my PhD at a prestigious German research institute) several months ago and got an acceptance email this weekend - I got it! I'm so excited and nervous!

I would totally encourage other people to apply to posts even if they think they'll never get it. I kept tellling people that I would never get it! :p:-)

I'm amazed that thread has been ressurrected again!! I remember it all first time around when it first kicked off, when I was but a first year PhD...

Hahaha me too chris!!! What a blast from the past!!!

lol, I know, right!!!

I thought the original poster was a bit of a homophobic douche to be honest so I was glad to see the back of him:

"But male gays scare me even worse. I can't stand them. I remember one guy I was developing a friendship with and then I realised he was kinda gayish. Yuck":-s

I met a man at a seminar yesterday who was 59, and then saw a 3 + 1 studentship advertised (which he got), and thought "hell, why not, I want to do this" and did! So late in life, he's started towards an academic career.

IBS affecting my doctoral work

Good plant sources of Omega oils are walnuts, flax oil or seeds, rapeseed oil, and good old tofu -

"Omega 3 fatty acids in foods such as: flax seeds, hemp seeds, sunflower seeds and grape seeds. Food sources of Omega 6 fatty acids include pistachios, olive oil, chestnut oil and olives. "

"Other foods rich in Omega 9 fatty acids are: olives, avocados and nuts: macadamia, pistachio, peanuts, almonds, sesame, cashew, pecan and hazelnuts."

If these sorts of foods play havoc with your IBS, then there are many vegetaria/vegan supplements on the market:

You could also try a supplement: http://www.v-pure.com/

Scarlett, try googling "vegan IBS" and lots of possible foods to help vary a diet a bit come up on discussion boards already, as well as technqiues for controlling IBS. I'm actually vegan and have come accross these sorts of discussions on vegan/vegetarian boards before whilst trawling the internet.

Sorry to state the obvious if you have already done so but, have you seen a doctor about your IBS? Increasing the fibre and water content of your diet can also help control IBS more...

Hope you're able to concentrate on work soon. Don't stress over needing to tell people if you don't want too - two weeks isn't that long to have had disrupted work, but if it carries on long term just approach your supervisor - you could always allude to "medical problems" if you didn't want to be specific....

I'm putting together a paper with an eighteenth century source I have translated from French into English (which I don't have any skill in, but was forced by circumstance to use). I just want to check in particular that this one line is correct, I posted about a year ago and got helpful replies, so here's hoping! :) I just want to make sure this one is right because it will be used in the title in particular:

"Il est de fait qu’on ne peut le voir sans rire": It is to do one's best to look without laughing? laughter?
