Must write chapter. Write.

Coffee. Coffee. Coffeeeeeee.

Why are you doing a PhD?
C

I'm doing it for the epic lulz, totally. :p

Seriously, career advancement. Intellectual curiosity. Fun, sometimes.

I tell myself this daily.

how many of us are self-funded?
C

I was self funded by working in the first year (though my fees were paid by the school) and people said I was crazy. I just ran with it and it was pretty exhuasting. Luckily I got funding eventually.

I know of other people who got funding second time around too.

Of course, Manchester is the obvious choice.

Some advice needed...

Firstly, smile! :-) This makes you, obviously, seem approachable and friendly...

Sometimes if I am fetching a cup of tea from a table or another drink - you can ask the person next to you what they would like as a gesture for opening conversation...:-)

Failing that, the mobile phone for texting is a lifesaver! :$;-)

URGENT: Last Tipps before submission?

My only tip would be to arrange something fun to do in the evening to celebrate and relax. Congratulations on submitting.

:-)

Do MA grades really count THAT much?
C

My university puts some emphasis on the importance on a good grade in the MA dissertation - as high as possible - or rather at least my supervisor does. I got a merit overall, but a distinction grade for my dissertation. Funding bodies might look at the grade breakdown, but realistically, normally it will be a combination of decent proposal and references with a solid MA grade which is a 60, I suppose.

Good luck with the workshop prep. I'm going to be snowed under the whole term with prep for classes and writing the two additional chapters my sups want for Jan! eek. So I have butterflies too!

Still at least I can work nocturnally! Perhaps I was meant to be born a crepuscular animal like a rabbit or owl. Heh.

Thanks for the replies.

Def. want to make a strict and slick first impression. I think it is the only way I won't appear as just another student to them. After a few weeks I think I can be more informal. I mean, I fully plan to bake cookies for the last 2 hour session before Christmas when people present their oral presentations. But I don't want them thinking I am a cookie baking sloppy softy in the first week! I want them to do the readings becasue my wrath would be not incurring!! I also think adopting a formal teaching persona will help my deal with (what I find a stressful) situation! heh

Thanks for the teaching advice pamw - I think I'll PM you later for teaching tips. I'm a GTA on the 'Afterlife of Objects' course.
