grrrrr, paying for use of pictures in theses!
C

a) I cannot believe I misspelt facilitated!

b) The only way I could afford to actually use pictures in said chapter is because I have gotten casual work/ extra role to pay for it!

Hmm, the hidden costs of a humanities PhD!

Just a little rant about having to pay to use pictures as sources in my thesis. There is no way to get around it. And I have spent about £60 already on pictures, and these are just for one chapter.

At least the British Museum collection is mostly free online. And whilst I love the British Library since its wonderful collection has basically fascilitated my entire PhD, I think £27 is a bit steep for a digital image. Sigh.

hej!

I have been gone for a few weeks because I had to really put in the hours to try and pass my panel - which I did. Then this was followed by a intense period of primary resource research reading tiny eighteenth-century print which was boring/wonderful at the same time. I found a lot of information which was really relevant for a chapter I am writing now (due in three weeks- eeek!). But I am back now, I did surf in and out of the forum I just didn't want to get sucked in and post - I'm making time to post now. And since I will (obviously) want to procrastinate whilst writing up my chapter I guess I will be here pretty often!

I'm utterly skint!

Extra cash - I started today at my university library doing casual exam period shelving in the library. I'm doing it just on saturdays until the end of term to help cope with the undergaduate exam rush. Ask in your library.

It is pretty exhausting, a little boring - but I keep thinking of the sweet, sweet money!

You are totally not alone on this -I have been so skint on ocassions that I've skipped meals, blown off coffee, and eaten noodles for dinner more times than I would care to remember.

I try and take packled lunch as much as possible, and will regard a coffee at uni as a treat. I'm vegan so sometimes there is absolutely nothing to eat at university anyway

I remember watching that on my black and white tv in my bedroom aged 9!

Is there anyone else out there undertaking a creative PhD?

Although my PhD isn't a creative PhD per se, I find researching and writing what is essentially a history PhD a creative process.

I met my boyfriend at the start of my first year, and as of halfway through my second year we are still together. He has been studying for a MA and will be starting a PhD in September. I guess it might help that we are both 'academic' people. I mean, we do only see each other once or twice a week, so work does need to be a priority and can't take a back seat. Maybe things will be harder when both of us do a PhD, I am not sure. I guess it depends on funding, stress, other issues etc.

What a Drag it is Getting Old

I find researching in a university as a PhD sudent arounds lots of younger students at undergaduate level makes me feel a little old!

I am paranoid about aging - I am determined to remain the same trouser size as I age. Must.

My boyfriend always stresses about his hairline and how it visibly recedes (it doesn't, in actuality!).
