Anybody else working late tonight?

2nd year misery
C

I am going exactly through the same slump right now. I feel an endless guilt about having to force myself out of bed to work and then struggle to produce cogent work. I keep thinking I am funded, this is my job, quit complaining and just do it - but I still feel in a slump. I'm hoping it is a symptom of the end of a busy 'term' pre-Christmas thing. I'm doing my last piece of work today and tmrw prior to a end of term meeting next week. Then no work until Boxing Day.

Best christmas present ever!

Congratulations!

That is fab!

Enjoy a great christmas break! God jul!

difficult to sum up thesis
C

I am doing a piece of work that is supposed to be summing up my thesis and be the core of what I am doing for the remaining two years. But I am struggling and it isn't easy and flowing - do I even have a thesis?! I'm trying to organise a structure and suggest chronological change but - argh!!! I mean, I know what I am looking at - but summing it up in various research questions and a cogent structure isn't easy. Any advice? My supervisors have been generous with advice - I just get the impression this is my problem with understanding and being a lacklustre student...

Doing a PhD 3 years on ?????

Maybe a supervisor would think you had commitment if you were still applying 4 years on - despite serious illness.

Good luck.

Overseas conference travel

Sorry - early in the morning! I misunderstood! I have made four trips around the UK. This month I will go on my first overseas conference.

I am a humanities AHRC funded PhD living outside London. I get approx £12,600 a year. The AHRC does not fund conference trips, unless you have been invited (does not include you sending an abstract, and it being accepted). I use my studentship to pay for them.

10-4 hours worked after lunch break and facebook time deducted!

I try to work 9-5, though normally 10-4 and I end up working on Ssturday to make up the slack. But even outside work I do think about it and the PhD is always on my mind.

I think the self perpetuation of the perception of a heavy workload is a problem too.

I meant enlightening, not exciting.

I refer to the work of "The King" (Elvis, 1973) and believe the following to be an exciting excerpt:

"Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time
You were always on my mind
You are always on my mind"

Presley, E. (1973) You are always on my mind Nashville: RCA Records
You are always on my mind"

ack...the need for chocolate today is palpable....

A nice walk in the winter rain and gloom seems to have vivified me, a bit! I still had the chocolate bar though (just a small 45g one...)
