Sleepyhead - crying isn't recreational. Surely it it is a normal daily function, isn't it....isn't it?

After four hours sleep (kept awake worrying about thesis, money, and upcoming conferences) I am feeling the need for chocolate today. Mmmm chocolate - comforting milky goodness. Must resist.

Yeah, I thought when I do go, I will take SFI (svenska för invandrare) classes when I arrive.

In terms of PhD's - most of the Swedish universities I looked at, like Gothenburg (Göteborg) offered PhD's to English speakers - but offered courses in Swedish (language classes) as part of the PhD so that you could (eventually) take part in seminars/conferences that are in Swedish.

I was on the net looking for Swedish language courses, and found that a lot of Swedish institutions teach undergraduate and MA courses with English instruction.

Karlstad University (Karlstads Universitet) offers a MA in Societal Risk Management for example, taught in English.

Actually I am going to be doing a session like this for MA students soon - so this thread will actually be rearch....the truths I shall tell them

There are 27 member states in the European Union, with 23 offical languages. You probably need to be more specific about where you want to go and different PhD systems will be vastly different....

I'm exploring tv on the internet.....seems a good option. I plan to spend extended weeks in Sweden once I have (with hope!) written up, and before I find a job.

So what languages do people learn here? You're brave to learn Hindi or Chinese - I'm sticking to latin script!

Why did I not know that the Swede's had a consulate in Manchester! I sense a pilgrimage coming on....

I am currently learning Swedish - with a tutor for an hour a week and the rest self taught. Since loads of you are international students, or good linguists - any hints for rapid development? I feel like after a year of learning I am ready to do more somehow...I want to start putting the hundreds of words together but I'm not quite sure how...I find grammar texts so dry....

Maybe I'm not making any sense! ;-)

I did it with a combination of:

a) coffee, and the herbal tea when the caffine was too much
b) needy text messages to boyfriend
c) fear
d) lack of sleep
e) no shower or shaving for 4 days

Fun?

UPDATE: Yes it is possible to write 10,000 words in four days. But they will be crap and you'll have to do them again. Like I did. Now, a month later I have just finished the redraft. It is 10,500 words and is much better, albeit not perfect, because nothing is!

o.stoll: I'm currently in the hellish phase. Perhaps a PhD is an authentic glimpse at purgatory?
