double trouble? funding happiness twofold!

*drools* Yes, a weekend in Stockholm - after the panel meeting and first draft of a chapter. Eek.

Congrats on the job Shani (well, by proxy!)

'We' (vomit: byf and I) think it is hillarious (and wonderful that our projects have been funding) - esp. since the government is cutting funding for the humanities that can't prove obvious economic benefit.

Well, I mean you could keep the two little girls and use them as future "PhD mothers"....

I loved your 'flailing toad' description. Funnily enough, I had two pet toads as a kid - and I have seen them flail.

That's horrible! Friends that have completed their PhDs all seem to taken anything between 3 1/4 years and 3 1/2 years...

...but then comparing a small rural humantities university with 1,500 students to a large metropolitan university with 36,000 students is like comparing chalk and cheese.

Hmmmm. I think the position of a university on the league table might have a bearing on some jobs more than others: like academia for example. Or with funding institutions. I don't think it matters too much. That said, the institution I did my MA (and do my PhD) at is about 30/40 places higher on the league table than my undergraduate. And I would be dishonest if I said that didn't matter to me....

I got it!

Congratulations! I heard positively from the AHRC last week, so I know how elated you must be too! And after those previous meagre rejection lettters - the big substantial envelope with the booklet inside felt so amazing!

Yay to you!

I funded my MA with a career development loan from the bank. I didn't get the job I really wanted when I finished so ended up temping and this made the repayments quite a burden. I started my PhD in 06 without funding and was still working to pay off this CDL. Now I am halfway through paying it off (yay!) and have now got funding for my PhD (which will be used to be me to pay off the CDL too!). So finally it has worked out!

What I am trying to say is: a CDL can fund you, but you may have to work part-time towards the end of the year to carry you through (you can only take out £8,000 with a cdl).

some good news
