Everyone writing now through the weekend - sign up!!!!!!!!
C

I am onto the third and final draft of a 6,000 word paper. I shall be working on it over the weekend. Handing it in on the Monday, getting final feedback and no doubt having to pull another all-nighter to send it to the journal on the Thursday by registered post to ensure a Friday delivery. Fun!

*grruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu*

I hate corrections and re-drafting.

In my case it isn't people talking about themselves - the reverse. With some friends and the boyfriend I just can't stop talking about my PhD.

I think there are points in a PhD when time is of particular essence. I am in the process of writing my first paper to send to a journal - so my time than normal has been eaten up. The 8/8/8 hour split would be ideal Rick - but sometimes balancing PhD, paid work and social life does seem a lot. In any case - I have decided to consciously avoid this pit again by arranging to meet with friends for coffee in the week, and attend a part at the weekend. Phew, social exile over.

This morning as my houemate left for work - he said 'what are you up to today?' I said 'reading'... he said 'anything else?' I said 'Urm...cleaning...urm...getting dressed'. I was told I hadn't seen anybody socially in a fortnight. And it is true. What with the British Library and writing a paper I had completely forgotten and even though I have social things lined up in a week or so... I can't believe I have let my social life atrophy and didn't even notice. * the shame* Anybody else?

Well the work that I want to use (a natural history from the seventeenth century) has been available for others to use. But the things I am interested in are normally in the footnotes and not what people have seen as 'valuable' before. I have not doubt that the work has been used for biographical purposes - but what I want reallty hasn't been seriously used or seen as anyhting but 'extra stuff'.

...I have found an archive source that will make, MAKE an entire chapter (or at least heavily structure) a thesis chapter.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Nam regnat nunc omnipotens Deus.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

I met my boyfriend three months into my PhD - he finished his UG in the summer and has been sporadically working/travelling this year before starting his MA in september.

I met him thorough the library. Maybe you could scoop out the various PhD rooms in your building, or perhaps flirt over department coffee, biscuits and conferences....?

I enjoy my PhD - but will be please when I can spend more time with friends and boyfriend.

ack! why did I only find out about this today.....must ammend overnight. sob.

I emailed it to the sups at 9am this morning (well, 9.15) - it was supposed to be with them last thing yesterday but I was waaaayyy to fatigued to footnote and reference properly. So I treated myself to four hours sleep and did that at 5am this morning. But it is done! Thank you!

I'm only doing light reading today and I shall probably doze off to radio four in the afternoon....

Why do this to myself? Answer: Because I can't organise myself and there isn't enough time in the day!

No sleep. Restructured paper and rewritten huge chunks of paper. Must write conclusion and refootnote. About four hours work left.

So tired.

Can't almost be bothered any more - I never want to write about subject X ever again. Ever.

You're both right there.

Although I'll have to change the title, and the focus of the paper my overall argument isn't badly damaged. In fact it may be slightly more robust if I change it to encompass the omission. But it is just annoying - I can't decide if I'm including it because it would be 'bad' scholarship not too, or because I'm scared of getting caught out!!!

Argh!

Having redrafted a paper to send to my supervisors tmrw before submission to a journal I have now become aware of a omission in my paper. At least I found out now (myself) - I would be red faced otherwise. But now I have to stay up all night and correct. Argh.

:-(

No sleep for Chris.

How are you celebrating?

I shall eat only porridge (made with water), drink with water and climb to the top of a mountain...

not.

I'll party in England and go to Sweden, and hug people, and cry, and over-emote. And then start wearing my doctoral robes wherever I go in a totally affected 'crazy academic' fashion.

As one of the Germanic languages Swedish has some affinities with several of the languages you already speak (clever you!) - Dutch, German and English. I wouldn't say it is easy - but only because this is the first second language that I am trying to acquire. Since you already are trilingual - I would say you could pick it up pretty quickly. I find some of the long compound words a bit tricky, but only becuase English doesn't use them much - but you speak German so you must be used to them!!!

rick, I'm just curious - what job do you have an interview for...
C

I am competent but speak very slowly and don't have a complex vocab, yet. But it has only been once year. I can however read basic news stories and listen to tv broadcasts on www.svt.se (a great resource) and listen to www.rix.fm or www.sr.se

I think Swedish sounds beautiful - and the best way to learn the lilting tones of the language is to sing along to songs (as I do in the kitchen, shower and on the way to work) - it also helps with learning to speak at speed, especially set phrases.

There was a poster on the forum at one point who spoke Swedish too...I can't remember who they were....sorry....
