I have to bribe myself: no time with boyfriend if I don't work. It doesn't always work - but I hate the guilt I get it I don't work. So usually the bribe pays off...

Yeah..it isn't the kind of book you would find on ebay, sadly. If you bought it...you would kind of keep it. The cheapest is £42 second hand (eeek!). Still it is hardbound and does have a nice cover.

Still, what with it being the most recent study on an area similar to mine (published 2006)...I've just had to photocopy vast chunks of it.

Sorry Mr Arnold [author]...you'll understand...you were a PhD student once....

...the book you want is REFERENCE ONLY, and so you are practically forced to skirt around the fringes of breaking copyright law by spending an afternoon with the photocopier?

The book is over £50 retail, so it is not like buying it is an option...

You could say:

Jag ska lära sig svenska

I'll learn Swedish

I love IKEA - when I went home from Christmas mum had been to Ikea and got meatballs, the cranberry jelly and the gräddsås (cream sauce). We even had red cabbage. Mum indulged me in my Swedish craze.....

Anyone else enjoying their PhD?

I see my PhD as akin to a relationship or the process of raising a child - it'll have its ups and downs - but sooner or later my abby will take its first steps (I'll finish the first chapter) and I'll be pleased.

I hadn't mean to show off Sylvester....I was just trying to say that I find it hard to work, and so when I do get a few hours of reading done I feel good *single tear*

Anyway, like other people - I work in fits and bursts around deadlines and specific tasks. It is the 'in-between' bits I find hard...

I'm pleased to see that other people have motivational issues sometimes. I feel pleased when I get several hours of reading done in a day...

I took out a career development loan for my MA and I still had to work some hours to compliment the max £8,000 you take out. I decided I wanted to do a PhD and so after a year out afterwards (and payment of installments) I am on a PhD, but still making repayments. I'm hoping it is worth it in the long term.....

So think carefully.....

Living cost of a PhD student
C

My education has been so expensive that I am so relived to have my PhD fees paid for....nontheless living costs and loan repayments aren't always that easy to meet. Still education has to be paid for somehow. I guess it is a bit much sometimes to expect the tax payer to meet all educational costs.... I can't see how my humanities BA and MA (in very specific areas) benefit a lot of people. Even still - they'll never 'pay their own way' so to speak. So I may as well enjoy em'....

I know...I look at my grandparents houses and pensions and at my parents (to some extent) security. Obviously I am glad that my grandparents have material comfort and would never begrudge the financial rewards of any labour...but I still weep to think that I will never get to that stage...

And to think...if she had taken the place...she would be 2 years into her PhD by now...
