Hi Ender, I did pay some of my debts with the money I saved from the stipend. Part of it is useful now that my funding has run out (luckily I have got a paid extension of 6 months but I don't know when I will receive my next salary as it involves paper work). I can survive at least couple of months without major problems.

I think most of the PhDs are funded for 3 years and most of the students take more than 3 years (like me).

I have some money in reserve for a holiday after the viva :p as Catalinbond mentioned a holiday after a PhD is absolutely necessary :-)

Hope all is well :-) I have been working really hard since last week and things seem to turn up positive and all my simulations are running ok :-) I have a meeting with my supervisors tomorrow for which I will be putting the results together.

I will be off to work in a bit, have to put all my results together for tomorrow's meeting with my supervisors. I have quite a lot of results to show this time which I am very happy about :-) My lovely friends are taking me out for tea this afternoon as I have been working all the time.

That's great, Flack. Please do post how it goes :-) I am sure you will manage. Getting an one bedroom/studio flat should be perfect. I am an international student came over to the UK in Oct 2008 and my home town in ~6000 miles away. I was crazy and brought over 75 kg all by myself (2 huge trolleys, 1 small trolley and a bag pack) - don't ask me what stuff I got with me ;-) I don't know how I managed this but I did some how! I flew from my home town and arrived in the UK, took a train to the next city and then taxi to where my accommodation was booked. Its almost like a night mare if I think about it now :p

Hi all, is it alright if I join this thread? I have got another thread where I am writing about my progress but I think it will be good for me to have short term doable goals and stick to them. I am doing my PhD in applied physics, supposed to submit next month but have got extension up to Dec for data collection and thesis submission by the end of March. I am aiming to finish everything off by 31st of Dec - am not sure how feasible this is going to be.

Today's goal: Submit two simulations and put together two results.

Congratulations!! Is this a fully funded PhD (tuition fees + living expenses)? If so you wouldn't have much problems finding a place to rent as you will have a steady monthly salary. I myself was in a rented flat (shared with a friend of mine) and now moved into the hospital campus where my office is for convenience as am very close to submission.

I don't know if you have experience of dealing with estate agents beware don't fall for their nice polite talk. I have had really bad time trying to find a flat lost 180 pounds holding fee and bla bla bla. I am sorry for saying things like this but just thought of warning you. Get everything in writing (if you request for more furnitures, professional cleaning) and get it signed.

Hi all, a little note about what's happening with me:

I completed 5 of my simulations and compared with the analytical calculations and they seem to be decent.
Done with the analysis and emailed the results to my supervisors.
Had a brief conversion with my primary supervisor about what I have been doing.
I am involved in another PhD student's work too and I taught him some stuff.

I had a meeting scheduled for tomorrow but it is postponed to Monday which means I have the week end to get some more results to be put together :-)

I am happy :-) Now going home to do some cooking/relaxing. I will be back to work after dinner. See ya.

I am very impressed to hear that you have started writing your thesis already! It is undoubtedly a wise move :-) I remember when I started my PhD my cousin who did her Masters dissertation in Oz was telling me to start writing since the beginning. I didn't actually understand why she was saying so and I didn't know how or where to start either without having much clue about the project.

I realize now as of how beneficial it would have been if I had started to write at an earlier stage. I have done quite a lot of work in the last three years but to be honest the amount of useful work is less than 60%. Of course, I had quite a lot of issues with my project tools itself which is another story. I would absolutely recommend anyone starting their PhD to write what they read/do since the beginning - writing helps to crystallise our thoughts and scientific writing is not that easy - it is a skill to develop slowly. It is ultimately the thesis, the magnum opus of each and every student which matters the most for the degree!

Don't worry about procrastinating now and then, it happens. All the best (up)
