Here is says it depends on whether you have done Math and Physics or a different doctorate. If different, its aprox 16K for non-London based salary and 20K for inner London.

Hi guys,
I am wondering how do you keep up with the current research. What kind of journals do you read? What are the best journals to keep up with various areas of science (apart from Nature).
Do you have any other ideas how to keep up?

My ex supervisor told me that when he was PhD student (not too long ago at all), it was quite common for people to fail their 1st year viva for the first time. They went on to have great careers apparently.

I think some people say that self-funding isnt a wise option but that is for natural sciences. There, after PhD, people will look at who provided your funding (as on other things of course). Wellcome Trust seems to be the holy grail, then BHF etc., then departmental awards etc.
But I dont think everybody looks at it that way anyway.
For humanities I believe it is an entirely different matter. And you are not too old at all!:)

Yes, I believe it does. It doesnt affect tax credits as the income isnt taxable but housing benefits, JSA etc it will.

I wouldnt do it. If it was me receiving the letter I would think of it like someone is trying to gain an advantage, a bit pushy and tbh a bit bum licking...

I am science and I got offered 5 fully funded PhD's including two funded by BHF, one by Wellcome Trust and two facultly funded ones.
I am a first class student, with experience during my second year summer break (funded by a society) and full year placement in a research envinronment. I had some awards for my academic performance as well.
Saying that, plenty of my other applications got refused so my advice is to keep trying.

Hi Socialplitik, thank you for your advice. I am sure they are very bright but I believe I am also:). Masters wouldn't be an option for me without a funding (family commitments). However, it doesnt matter now because I have been offered Wellcome Trust studentship at UCL! So yeah, I am good enough! It was hard but its possible. Just wanted to update in case if other people from ex-poly will be searching for a similar thing.
I am really happy because I don't think I could have got much better than that. So dont ever give up:)
