PhD or job?? Help
D

Completely agree with what Sneaks says. Really hope you make whatever you feel is the best decision for you and try and not have too many "what if" conversations with yourself afterwards.

Plus don't forget there are still opportunities, the supervisor has probably said that because it means he would have to go out and get someone else - and don't forget the option of part time PhDs or even doing something like an MRes or MPhil if you didn't want to do a full PhD.

All the best whatever you decide :-)

so is the london meet up happening after all?
D

Sorry to bump this up but was wondering if there was any plans to do a London meetup?

Am I going mad...

I'm so pleased I'm not totally mad (I'm happy being a bit mad, makes life more colourful!)

PamW, I love the idea of having a travel partner for long distances! I could do with one of those for when I travel up to see my parents!

I think Universities should have the right to fire anyone who suggests, let alone uses, Comic Sans as a suitable font :-s

Oh I so hope other people do this otherwise I'm going back for a psychiatric referral.

I like to sit and talk to the cat, and pretend that he has a voice and talks back. But the voice I give him is a really stupid one - if you've ever watched the Simpsons it's the voice they always use for the young geeky spotty assistant at the grocery store type , but with a British accent.

We even have (usually sarcastic) conversations along the lines of:

Me: What have you been up to today, pussy pussy pussy?
Cat: Er... I'm a cat... might give you a clue what sort of things I get up to?

Oh gawd if nobody else does this I'm really gonna go :$

has anyone ever felt tired of helping

Hi Satchi,

Is your friend finding it difficult to cope with life or is she suffering from depression do you know? I say this because some of the things mention resonate when I had depression and was struggling - everything is very negative, clinging to anyone who showed a bit of sympathy or care and also being very selfish about needs. It had exactly the same effect it seems to on you - people being driven away. But there were some pretty horrid underlying reasons in my case and I'm wondering if your friend is having a difficult time of things and doesn't know what options there are to deal with things?

I don't know I'm afraid; but the ones that are cheap are cheap for a reason. You get what you pay for (and sadly the good universities know they can capitalise on their name).

Sorry to be blunt, but all the unis you have listed have a poor reputation. Either go to a decent business school or save your money.

In this case, yes, I would put 0.002 - it's acceptable to do so if your 2 dp don't make sense.

PhD or job?? Help

As someone who did a PhD and now works private sector, I would say ... go for the job. As you point out experience is everything. If I had my way again, I'd never do the PhD and would have worked my way up.

I'd go for option 2 - the words "losing battle" spring to mind...

www.proz.com is THE place for translators to hang out and I think you can put work up for them to bid on.
