Rising Fees
D

I would think that is what would happen as well, Stressed, where only new students would see the increases.

It also talks about undergraduate fees, postgraduate fees have always been a different kettle of fish altogether, I don't believe they are capped in the same way anyway (happy to be proved otherwise).

introducing the chapter themes in the intro?
D

I didn't introduce all my chapters individually in the introduction. Instead, I gave an overall view of the flow of the thesis and what would be set out (this is what my thesis is about, i look at what other people did first, here's some work i did, here are some novel contributions i made), then gave a brief introduction to each chapter within each chapter, and say how it linked to the previous chapter(s). I then recapped in my final discussion what I had actually done overall.

Algaequeen, I didn't get them when I joined, I can't actually remember how I got them... I remember where i was living at the time though.

Is it still the two Andy's who run the show? I always imagined them as a bit of a double act, like Morecambe and Wise or Hinge and Bracket.

You got pens? Oooooo how I would love a FindAPhD pen...

Well, that was a find! My parents are currently redecorating all the bedrooms (now I've moved out, although I'm still having a bedroom there as a base as lots of friends and family around the area so often visit).

In the list of things they've found are...

... my FindAPhD Post-It notes! I got these aaaaaaaaaaaaaages ago - about 4 years ago - and a mousemat if I remember correctly!

I think Andy and Andy (and Caz now of course!) should give away some more, share the love

:-x

Good Presentation
D

Excellent news! And it'll get easier and easier from now :-)

I think these types of affairs (PhD students presenting to each other) are becoming more and more common to get students used to presenting academically - I had to present my first year and second year work to two departments (thanks to my interdiscplinary topic). Actually that was really good fun - I was used to presenting to mathematicians so presenting to biologists was quite a challenge!

Belford, smelford! This bad boy's reaching for the sky!

Oh, I can't type straight I'm laughing so hard.

Maybe you could go and lecture at Belford with such honoured qualifications?

A Very Serious Plumbing Problem - [Men Only]

Glad you got an appointment sorted. Sounds like all is going well, so once it's sorted I'm sure you'll be well away! Just hope you don't get a leaky tap... ;-)

Am I good enough for this?
D

Many people on here successfull have done PhDs without having a first and a masters at distinction - I got a 2.1 in my UG and a passed my masters. I graduate for my PhD next month. I went straight from one to the next without doing anything in between. So it's certainly possible.

However, it does depend on your subject and where you applying to and, sad to say, where you did your other degrees - there is a lot of snobby rivalry from some people. And some places are very, very competitive indeed. I applied to 6 PhD places, got 2 offers, withdrew from one, rejected by one (chose one and didn't pursue the others). Someone once asked me why I had "applied to so few"(!)

It's normal to feel disappointed though - but just have to persevere. It's not an impossible challenge. And it's good to have criticism as well, learn from it, and use it to your advantage.

Well first thing tomorrow, get yourself booked in with the GP.

Spooky thing about dating...

I would be happy with just one person from each letter of the alphabet.

Mind you as a serial dater, I've probably just about made it through (I did go on a date with a Xander once!)

It took me a couple of reads to understand the problem (my dad is a genuine plumber so I was expecting a thread on how to fix a leaky tap!).

Medication can cause problems, when I was on medication for depression I had the same problem. Stress is as a common problem as well. If you're doing long nights, tiredness won't be helping. However, although don't let this scare you too much, there can be physiological problems that may be causing it. Sadly there is only person who will be the best to know, and just remember, your GP will have seen it all before.

(As you'll know if you ever have (medical) doctor friends trying to outdo each other with what things they've seen...)

Fortunately my phone stores them in order of the last name. Otherwise I agree it could get interesting...

In the past few months that I've been down in the new town for my new job, I've been on five dates. Today at work it hit me that all of them had a name that begins with A.

Is it a sign? Am I going to spontaneously combust? Will I have to carry on only dating people with a name starting with A for fear of being cursed forever?
