Should I get facebook?

She was proud of you and your achievements, Sneaks, which is great but I'm with you I wouldn't want it shared without my permission.

Should I get facebook?
D

I'm not fussed on Facebook. I don't really put information on it (just links to videos I like) and am not on it with my full real name. I have all the privacy settings set to maximum and only have a few friends on it. When I first started using it, it was with my real name but people from the school I went to (people I didn't actually know) requested to be friends through some friends on there and it was getting out of hand. Facebook also seem to change their privacy settings without warning which is a concern and I have concerns about how they use the data. I also noticed people tend to forget themselves on there and post stuff they wouldn't normally detail in 'real life' and by association it could reflect on me, if I had them as 'friends'.

People are essentially like sheep and will follow the crowd but I think most don't really get why they use Facebook. Sadly, some people do seem to live on it and try to make as many 'friends' as possible through it (people they don't know in 'real life') and then give these people access to their photos, personal information etc...It's madness!

I'd give it a miss or take the approach I have.

Horrible Viva Experience

Good advice from Sneaks. They think your work is of doctoral level and YOU PASSED!!!! I'm not underestimating what you've been through but that aspect is behind you. Try to look to the positives and....well done (up)

writing conclusions: any tips?

Quote From skig:
How do your sups want you to finish the thesis? Would your final discussion do?
I think a short conclusion would be best as I think it's becoming long winded and runs the risk of going round in circles and an examiner will not be impressed reading the same thing just phrased in different words. My supervisors are not big on suggestions or guidance no matter how often I prompt them. The very vague feedback they gave me has only made me more confused.

You've been great though and thanks for the support (up)

Just to add, I wasn't told to change my discussion sections or move parts to a conclusion chapter.

writing conclusions: any tips?

I had to do two studies and these formed two different chapters and as part of each chapter I had a large discussion section. I would say I've included all the five things you've suggested but have your point 4 as my point 3. My supervisors want a conclusion, which I'd already done, but they've been very, very vague and my impression is much of what I have in the dicussion should be in the conclusion (but they really have been vague) but I shouldn't repeat myself too much. Given that I've done all you've suggested (already had done) I cannot see what to put in a conclusion chapter that would add to things.

Quote From skig:

Here are the tips for structure from my sups:
1) tell them what you told them - i.e. review findings
2) what this means theoretically, how your findings fit with current theories, what's new, etc
3) critically evaluate your research - what was good/bad of approach/methodology
4) implications for practice if applicable
5) future studies

That's the order they told me but I've been doing 3, 1, 2, 4, 5 as I felt the flow was better this way but I don't think it matters as long it contains all the info and it flows.

Extra things to add:
anything that you expected to find and didn't find
did you achieve your research goals?

Good luck!

Excellent - thank you! I've already put a lot of this in the discussion and find I'm blurring the lines between the discussion and conclusion. It's much harder than I thought it would be. Although unlike some have said on here I enjoyed writing the discussion as opposed to other aspects of the thesis.

Thanks again!

I am going to stay away from facebook and chocolates until I submit my thesis!

Don't make the thesis all there is or you'll go stir crazy. The odd distraction does help.

Good advice and doing something we enjoy now and again as a reward can actually increase productivity.

Did anyone crack this? I'm at this stage now and really struggling!!!

Is it too early to be worried about publication record?
D

For employment purposes afterwards, especially if you've an interest in academia OR research, I would strongly suggest you get a publication during your PhD. I was turned down for a RA job due to having no journal publications.

STRESS!
D

Quote From ady:

Very few people seem to go through this process stress free although a colleague passed his viva last week with no corrections having submitted in 2 1/2 years in just two drafts! His thesis is 72,000 words long and his viva was just over one hour. He really should write one of the those 'how to ...' books as he did his PhD pretty strategically and it worked! We started the same day :$

sorry Kikuka, didn't mean to hijack your thread. Hope you get good news on your corrections soon (up)

Good on your colleague but don't compare yourself. Ady, you had a LOT to contend with and are doing a PhD in good time and with a family to look after and take care of. Your colleague may not have been faced with the same pressures... You'll do it!!!

What you have learned about yourself

Quote From ginandjazz:
I'm actually really impatient.

I'm seriously impatient as regards feedback but then I had to wait 18 months for my first piece of feedback and months for the other feedback.

Waiting for feedback has been a constant source of stress, rather than the PhD itself.

Resubmission fees - should I have to pay them?
D

Sara1987, Corinne, has given really good advice. I do feel from what you've written that you have been badly treated but trust me, and I say this from past experience, there are some battles you may never win and even trying to fight them (as I did) will cause you more harm than them. I do genuinely feel for you because I have some sense of what you've experienced (not through the PhD) and although I hate to say it, it would be best to pay the money and collect your well earned PhD, use it and show them that you're the biz!

The Other Side...
D

Five months, has it been that long already? Glad you got a job, seem to like it but am glad you have the courage to follow your dreams...following ours dreams is easy as we all do it through our imagination but to do it in reality takes great courage...

All the very best and let us know how you get on.

Good to see you back!

Are you enjoying your PhD?

screamingaddabs, strangely enough, in the past, I've read your posts and very much identified with your views. So it is true that great minds think alike!!!(up)
