Thanks Ian, I think I understand. I'll look into it and see if I can make a take down request (it's already bound). I nearly asked on here but thought it was a done deal that it had to be open. It's not rational but I get really annoyed when people assume this topic is my area of interest.

The way the form read to me it would be made available after a time anyway and so I OK'd it. Personally, I'd rather bury the thing and hope people don't think it reflects my interests.

Thanks Dunni73. I'm getting a lot of rejections and feel slightly frustrated but appreciate it's more down to circumstances (the economy) and not a personal thing. Exploring a lot of avenues now and the best thing I can do is to keep trying.

Did anyone else respond to the advert on an academic jobs website from the University of South Australia?

More generally, what's it like working and living in Australia - I've always had notions for it but don't know anyone in Australia.

Yes, square 45 is where I and many others on here reside. I've tried a number of options to remove myself from this esteemed place but to no avail. A PhD is a great career move - not (for many!)

...and still you miss working on a project? To think I always felt sorry for you;-)

I certainly don't miss my project but I do have a full-time job looking for work:p

Why would an academic want to see my thesis when it is not in an area of interest to them? This academic is aware of my interests and we have a common interest (but it's not the topic of my thesis).

Any thoughts? They're being very vague...

Bewildered, I admire you. You worked hard and are in a post you strived for but you seem to keep your feet firmly on the ground and give a good overview of academia which helps people get an insight and make informed decisions. I hope you always remain like that. In the department I was with they totally sold the benefits of doing a PhD to me (tried to encourage me to consider self-funding) but being astute I knew the reality of what the future would most likely be. I groan when I see or hear of people that self-fund because it may be a poor investment in terms of time and money. I feel very fortunate that I was funded and due to the recession and lack of other opportunities I suppose I had time to spend on it.
