help needed
D

I'm not sure what to say but if that's your experience I feel sorry for you. My sups provided minimal input, in my opinion, and it did choke me having to thank them for all the "support". Thankfully, the project I was doing, while of no real interest to me, was pretty straightforward to do but I did feel very frustrated at the lack of feedback. Things would have been much worse if the project had of been difficult. It depends on how far in you are etc etc. You have my sympathy.

SHOCKED!!

Dalmation, probably having the best private prep on her CV helped as well. In life, it really can be about who you know and not what you know:-(

SHOCKED!!

Quote From DrJeckyll:

However, I am very curious about the PhDs. What the hell do they do about the data collection? Do they fake the data? And then how do they publish?

That's exactly what I was thinking. Added to the fact that supervisors have at least some type of role at PhD level and surely they would pick up on whether or not a student understood the topic as they have to converse to some extent. I didn't realise it was such a problem.

SHOCKED!!

Quote From DrJeckyll:

I had done this job myself, I am not exactly proud, but I paid the bills. I used to charge far more around 1000 pounds for a coursework and more than 3000 pounds for a master's dissertation. I was getting more money than any " normal" job would pay and I was never out of work.

How did you get into this in the first place?

Quote From TwankyPhD:

i would be going above their heads if i were in your position!

In my experience, this would not be a wise move. When challenged people often adopt a pack mentality and they'll look after what they see as their own. It's not right, it's not fair but very sadly it's part of life. I've been there and so I know. PhDstruck, keep your head down but chin up, work hard and deliver the goods. If only for their own agenda and careers your supervisors will want you to pass. Honestly, it reflects badly on them if you don't and try to remember that.

A very interesting read for prospective PhD students

Although I've finished my PhD I did read it and would recommend it. Thanks dwro8ea

xmas....

Quote From Cornflower:

Actually I did do something which was truly amazing which I never would have done if I'd spent Xmas with others -- I went for a walk around the city I'm in (I live in the middle of town). And it was absolutely incredible, I've never seen any city so completely empty, with only a few people sitting around in the scattering of bars that were open. I really got to see my city in a very, very different way, and I took some amazing photographs of empty bridges and streets that are normally full of people and cars. So it was actually quite special in the end, I'm glad I chose to brave it alone rather than accepting any of the awkward last-minute offers to go and stay with peripheral family members who I don't know all that well.

I LOVE walking the streets when they are empty. The world feels very peaceful, doesn't it? I'm so glad you enjoyed your day and I spent most of it on my own and enjoyed it as well. At least you know people were thinking of you and it was your decision to spend the day on your own. I always feel so, so sorry for people who have lost someone during the year and those who are forced to spend it on their own because no other options are open to them.

Good to hear from you

xmas....

Just up and going to spend the bulk of the day by myself but will have dinner with my family later. Cornflower, I hope you're OK, your not the only one on here that has indicated they will be alone and I have a friend who lives alone and has been diagnosed with the flu and has been told not to have any vistors today.

I hope you enjoy today, whatever you decide to do. Merry Christmas.(gift)

PhD probation

Quote From Treeoflife:

To be honest with you, this sounds like they did not appreciate you ticking the 'not enough supervision' box.

I'm inclined to agree if they were able to see the box you ticked. Difficult to say without knowing your supervisors but it sounds as though it's their way of slapping your wrists while protecting their backs. It would be bad practice if they could see what you write about them. I would think it should be confidential.

However, going back to a point I made previously, you're nearly three years in and it's in their interests to see you complete and pass as it reflects very badly on them if you don't and so try to keep this in mind. I think you'll be OK for that very reason and they might even tighten their game as well. Keep your head down, continue to work hard and let us know how you get on.

PhD probation

When you say, "it came to light that I have not had as much supervision as I ought to have had" is that your opinion, what your sups have said or what another party has said?

It is a poor show that they didn't comment on your progress report but I'm confused because you say they have ticked you as 'unsatisfactory' and asked you to resubmit the report. Did they or didn't they comment on your report?

I think it's also a poor show that you submitted two chapters yet received no feedback and were then put on probation. More positively, you're 3 years in and so they'll be anxious to get you through it and probation (although this is only my opinion) might suggest that they intend to keep a closer eye on your progress. Sounds like a back covering exercise but they and the University will be working to get you through the PhD so hopefully you reach a successful conclusion.

Another job offer - somewhere over the rainbow!

Best of luck with it all!

How many references have you got!
D

Totally agree with Sneaks on this.

Another job offer - somewhere over the rainbow!
D

Wow...Minus the job offer I could have written your post Wally. That's my thinking. I'm dying a death here but share all the same concerns you have. I've only been away for conferences and only to Europe. Would I do it? With a very, very, heavy heart I think I would. My attitude is I would be going away for a good job, there's nothing aside from my family to keeping me here (parents, siblings) and if it didn't work out I could always come back but know that at least I gave it a try. I know many people who have moved to Australia and only one regretted it (it wasn't that he didn't like Australia but just he was dreadfully homesick). That said, all the people I know that have moved were part of a couple and so had each other. I totally understand your concerns though and have probably ran each and everyone through my head.

I hope you make the right decision for you.(up)

Reliance on passive voice
D

I wouldn't be guided by Word on this matter. If you're that concerned (and I don't think you should be) ask someone who you think will give you an honest opinion on your writing. I'm not entirely convinced my supervisors read much of what I wrote but think they had a good sense of my writing style. Focus and be calm!

Reliance on passive voice
D

Not sure if this is of help or not but I haven't a clue whether I write in a passive or active voice but it doesn't concern me because it's never been flagged up. Take a step back, your supervisor hasn't made any reference to it in terms of your writing and so maybe it's not the issue you think it is.
