Applications and Interviews

Frankly, I think the person interviewing you was on a power trip and so don't be too hard on yourself. Look to the other interviews, OK - so you didn't get the posts but you appear to have interviewed OK.

I once went to an interview, armed with my qualifications and was told they had no interest in seeing them as with computer technology I could have produced them myself!!! I was livid and contacted HR on my return home and they were fantastic, said that shouldn't have been allowed to happen and actually encouraged my to put a formal complaint in.

Hello im new looking for advice

Hi,

You seem to have been through a lot. If your health still isn't great, I would suggest withdrawing for another year if you can, as this will take some of the pressure of you. If you are able to do this, I would also suggest you try to do some of the write up in this time as well but easy does it.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm slightly confused. Did some of you do a reference section or a bibliography section, or both?

Thanks, that's good to know as I think mine should be about the same. I hope you don't mind me asking but how many pages was your bibliography?

Quote From sneaks:

its not really writing style, its content. How in depth should I go -I feel like I need to acknowledge a lot more research than sup is saying I do. She's saying keep it really simple, but I'm worried that its too much. But then I imagine my other examiner reading it and I think that simple is ok.

Confused!

I hope you haven't written your thesis like that or I could understand why your supervisor doesn't 'get' it!:p

It's one of those things unfortunately and very subjective. You can't please all of the people all of the time. It might be best to look at the level of content covered by your examiner and be guided by this. Perhaps your expectations are too high or you're too close to your thesis. I know it's always said on here but your supervisor is working with you for a pass and since they can be more objective about your work it might be wise to be directed by them. That said, I'm inclined to listen and work with my gut instincts as I need to feel comfortable with my decisions.

Is it close to the work of the examiner in terms of writing style etc? I know nothing about my examiners but constantly question what I've written, consider possible things that could be thrown up at viva and try to address these in the thesis. My writing style is common I think and so I've no concerns about that. Basically, write your thesis to please your examiners as your fate is in their hands, others should be of less concern. Look at your examiners writing styles, research them and do what you need to do to pass!

Is outside, on the QT help a remedy for bad supervision?

I'm not sure what stage / year you're in and it's probably too late this year but could you not apply for another funded PhD elsewhere and forget about this one by omitting it from your CV?

Is there any way you could get through the PhD by having your supervisor still 'officially' on board but you have the knowledge and skills to make it on your own?

Terrible position to be in. Hope it works out.

How many typos can you get away with?!!
D

Quote From dunni73:

The list of corrections that I made comprised of a table spanning about 2 A4 sides of paper which I had a copy for everyone in the viva.  However, my sup advised I kept hold of it until they mentioned typos etc - they never mentioned it and I didn't divulge!!

I agree with Bilbo and Dunni73 and they are best placed to advise. However, I'm with Dunni73 and would keep a note and bring it on the day but not volunteer it until if / when the conversation arises.

KB, I've every confidence in you but best of luck anyway!

To continue with PhD or not!!
D

Could you 'officially' go part time (reducing the registration costs) but work on your project 'unofficially' full-time?

Thanks Ady, that's good advice. I've made bullet points and will expand on them but will take the rest of the night off.
