6 months break from PhD

As long as you can afford the practicalities in life (food, shelter) do what makes you most happy.

I hate to say this but do find out more about the £250 but don't rock the boat as you've a future career to look after.

Congratulations on passing by the way!!!

Yes, google doesn't help matters when it comes to not declaring the existence of the PhD. But how would an employer view this if and when they come to know. wouldn't they feel like "what else could s/he the hiding from us?" Just a thought!

...and one I agree with. I've always been very honest with potential employers in the past (sometimes to my cost) but getting found out is a concern.

Having struggled to get on the employment ladder in the past, I long since saw the as an option and was going to use it. Without my consent, and much to my horror, my details were put online.

I can't remember exactly but it's a very high percentage of employers that now google search potential employees.

Has she also considered the time honoured strategy of hiding her PhD and referring to the PhD period as a 'fixed term Research Assisstant's position'?

Good suggestion but sadly, sometimes that's not always possible as a google search may flag it up. Best to check yourself against google first. It's good your supervisors were sympathetic to your situation.

...and reading this with fresh eyes and Claudia's response I think she's given excellent advice. I really shouldn't respond to posts when I'm half asleep! I would question if you are expected to pay the £250 if you do the corrections within 4 weeks though, as that would annoy me.

Deadline is this summer - let's do it together!

Fantastic slowmo. I hope the viva goes smoothly and let me be the first to wish you all the best for it:-)

Batt21, I just wanted to offer my support but I've no words of advice as I've still to submit. I can see why you're upset and it must be very frustrating and you're right to seek advice which I hope someone on here can give. It all takes away from the fact that you've passed but try to remember that you have passed (just make the corrections). If you believe you can do it in under 4 weeks, go show them but follow their report to a T, while continuing to get advice. I must admit I'd be annoyed about having to pay £250 unnecessarily and so do look into this.

Keep your chin up!

Sick and Tired of my supervisor

You've been given some excellent advice on this thread. I know it's extremely frustrating as I had to wait 18 months for my first feedback and up to then had been pushing for it. It's very difficult to stomach but much more so when not in receipt of funding I'd imagine. As I've said, some excellent advice on this thread and so there's not much more I can add.

I hope it all works out.

Hi, my supervisor is OK and going by many of the posts on here is better than most. I just find that they're a bit lacklustre given that it's their research interest they wanted researched. If I ever have any dealings with others in the department, they always make sure to be there making all the right noises but I'd rather they forgo these and provide feedback at a faster rate. I do like them though...

I do agree that there needs to be some accountability as some people really suffer and are at the mercy of their supervisors and I do think all universities should follow up and post on their supervisors web pages about the destination of their PhD students a year after completion.

I was reading your post and do feel for you.

KB, thank you. It's lovely of you to show your concern when you have much more serious problems, which I'm hoping will soon be a distant memory.

Sneaks, thank you as well. I hope you came through it OK and fingers crossed you get the job or funding (your preferred choice!).

The good news is I've still a lot to do but am on a home run, which will be a relief!

I've given you all a star (or those I can) as you're all top people!

The good thing about being down is you can only go up (up)

Sorry all, you've ALL made good points and I'll admit I'm a bit down and feeling even more negative than usual and so I shouldn't be posting. However, that's partly what this forum is for - a release and I do provide help and support on occasion!

I am lucky, deep down I know that but feel a bit disheartened at the lack of posts and opportunities there are - it's frightening! I do not want to move yet again and especially not for short term contracts but at least I know I'm not alone.

No, I'll just grab ALL the money and split!!!
