R &R Trust issues with supervisor- need honest answers, but don't know how to ask
D

I concur, that approach is not going to help. That will just make you sound petulant.
The student is responsible for their thesis - this process is meant to be about proving you're ready to be an independent researcher.

I was punished for being honest and being myself
D

It's not too surprising given the inherent resistance from certain faiths to the concept of human rights full stop if it contradicts centuries old religious tradition infused with misogyny. I imagine that these type of political considerations are not uncommon in certain fields.

Justifying sample size for an interview study
D

Ditto here - explained that reached the greatest number of subjects I could via a snowball sampling technique and also that most themes reached saturation. I also mentioned other sources of information.

Justifying sample size for an interview study
D

I had a similar number of interviewees, but the pool of subjects was so small that this was perfectly acceptable for a qualitative study.

Disagreement
D

Thanks guys. I was a little surprised at how short the viva was, but again I guess that's a good sign. The external is a nice chap, so there was no danger of any problems. I've checked the resources he mentioned and I'm now certain I'm right! Naturally I will state this in a circumspect way giving my evidence.

Disagreement
D

I had a disagreement with the main authority in my thesis subject area at my viva. I'll be interested to see what he recommends for my minor corrections, as I am pretty sure I am right on this point. However, he is a very reasonable guy so I think he'll just ask me to discuss the issue more thoroughly. Anyone else had issues like this?

Burning Bridges in Academia
D

There's undoubtedly some odd personalities in academia, but also lots of lovely people. Often the mediocre are the nastiest. Keep plugging away and producing and people will notice you and want to collaborate.

How long did you wait from submission to viva?
D

I haven't heard about a viva date yet, submitted about a month ago.

Peter Lang Publishing
D

It depends on the topic I would think - I'm certainly planning a monograph as the word count for journal articles is very limiting. It just won't be a reproduction of my thesis. I missed out a "not" in my previous post!

Peter Lang Publishing
D

Thanks, that fits with what I had heard. Certainly wanting to publish my thesis as a monograph, can't think of a more pointless thing to do! Read one or two and it's a total disaster.

Peter Lang Publishing
D

Hi, does anyone have any experience with Peter Lang Publishing (or heard about them from colleagues)?

Where to publish your PhD literature review?
D

How often do literature reviews get published? I have published review articles, but they were nothing like my literature review.

Big funders
D

I find the talks on how to get funding from senior academics quite frustrating TBH. They tend to be far too optimistic about the chances of ECRs getting funding. The system is not really fit for purpose.

viva failed
D

I echo marasp's comments - major corrections is not a fail! Positive feedback doesn't mean that there can't be any improvements, so don't see this as a negative thing.

Big funders
D

Just wondering if anyone has had particular experience with the big funders that suggest some of them are better to deal with than others? Listened to a Wellcome Trust guy speak at a conference recently, and I wasn't impressed at all at their criteria for making grants, which seemed to based very little on the research design or ideas.
