New forum design - what do you think? Any problems?

Too homogenous

Worried about supervisor/publications
D

Learning how to work with your supervisor is part of your development - after all, you'll have colleagues to work with in the future who are even more difficult to work with.

I think getting fed up of being a PhD student and wanting to move on is excellent motivation for getting the thesis finished! I'm feeling exactly the same way.

NASTY PHD SUPERVISOR
D

Personally I think it's a big step to take and almost certainly a mistake.

How do you backup your work? : )
D

I use this software that automatically uploads to the cloud, because I would forget to keep saving the latest versions otherwise.

I'm going through the stage of finding it difficult to work, so have decided I need to get into campus more. There's a reading group on Foucault, which is something I probably need to know about but know very little at present, so that's a good excuse.

Publishing thesis as a book or articles
D

Personally I can't see the sense in all PhDs being monographs. I read one recently that was very poorly edited and read exactly like a PhD thesis, which it shouldn't do. I'd do what you think best, personally. I plan to try and write two books partly based on my thesis, but with big chunks removed and big chunks added.

Research that has many references vs. limited references?
D

I need to give myself a big kick up the backside - otherwise fine, thanks :)

Research that has many references vs. limited references?
D

Not at all, a dearth of references is a sign that there may well be ample opportunities for original research. That's the case in the niche I'm studying.

How long is (was) your proposal?
D

My instution set a word limit, which I went over IIRC (but because it's interdisciplinary like yours, Dan, I got away with it). I think mine was meant to be 3,000 words.

Tell my supervisor or not?
D

Glad it worked out OK. People are much more informed about mental health issues these days, thank goodness.

Co-authorship with Supervisor !
D

I've heard the record for the number of authors for one paper (in science of course!) is 150...

How many times do you have off days?
D

Off days are absolutely vital IMO. Not necessarily weekends though.

This makes me think of one of my philosophies on the whole PhD thing - don't get too stressed by days where you don't get much done for whatever reason, it's your overall progress that matters. There's days when you get loads done, and days when you do nothing, but it's the average that matters.

Quote From eska:

Glad you are fully dressed, and not dressed up - which would be quite inappropriate for daywear ('dressed up' means either special occasion wear or fancy dress) unless, of course, you are dressed as a banana or similar!

That's an idea, wearing top hat and tails to get in the mood for studying!
