Deadline is this summer - let's do it together!
D

Well done slowmo, just another few weeks to submission! Its great to hear progress amongst us summer submitters, keep going everyone (up)

Early submission in 6 weeks, viva in 7 weeks!
D

To be honest when I submitted my thesis I was living and breathing the document and knew it inside and out.  A couple of months later when my viva date was agreed, I felt really disconnected with my thesis and am having to go through it all again to refresh my memory. I would have prefered to have had my viva soon after submission as the break and waiting for three months is quite depressing.  Good luck for the next six weeks, it looks like your sups are really trying to help you with post PhD progression to fellowship aswell!

Well, I am currently in the process of working through the google translation of the PDF article. It is a rather slow process as some of the 'e' are expressed as '6' along with some other oddities etc. I am hoping to get a general feel for the article via this route, but I suppose the examiners won't have a translation with any luck lol :p

Thanks Doodles and Ady, I think that the technicalities of the article may be problematic for translation without losing the meaning via google or Firefox. I have had a personal friend translate a different article (dif language) but don't know anyone to translate this one! Would it be a problem at viva to have an article cited based on the english abstract without reading the whole thing? Not sure how best to deal with that!

Eeeeek- dilemma! How would you feel about this?
D

Hi KB, I would devise a timeplan of work that needs to be done within the new timeframe. If it looks feasible, and with sups backing (which sounds like you have already), then I would go for it. In my limited experience of wrtiting my thesis, I found I got to a point where I could procrastinate no more. A thesis is like a living document that can always be modified, edited, extended etc and I think you have to draw the line and submit. Obviously, I have yet to have my viva and only that will highlight whether I submitted hastily.... :$

I have an article where the abstract is written in english but the article otherwise is in french-canadian. It would be nice to be able to read the entire article so that I can critique it effectively for my viva prep, although from the absract there are some obvious weaknesses. Is there an easy way to get a translation of the article?

I am looking for the following article but cannot access through uni due to its publication date. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Geiser, J and Betticher, DG 1989 Gas transfer in isolated rabbits lungs perfused with red cell suspension or haemoglobin solution, Respiration Physiology 77(1) pp31-39.

A question for those currently job-seeking...

Oops looks like my question may incite advertising, sorry I just wanted to see where to search for jobs apart from this site. Oh well, disregard my query and I will find out the info elsewhere :$

A question for those currently job-seeking...

Hi, I thought I might jump in on this thread to ask where do you find these jobs advertised? I will be looking for work again at the end of the summer, post viva and relocation. I am happy to apply to research assistants to post docs if the numbers add for childcare too!

I PASSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations Dr Sozaboy! Yesterday was obviously a good day for vivas! Would love to hear all about it if you get time, but can understand there is some celebrating to do :p

I PASSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well done Dr Pineapple, I have been awaiting your news all afternoon! I am so pleased you have had such a good result after everything you have had to endure including such negativity from your sups. Go and enjoy some much deserved celebrations and when you get back down to normality I would love to hear all about it.

to number or not to number
D

I did the format you are suggesting so at least that way I could refer to a particular section. I didn't to start with but changed to the numbered format in the last editing stage. Mine is science based and not sure if this is subject specific, but liked the ease/fomality of it. I guess I will find out the examiners opinion soon enough but my sup agreed it!

Word help - page breaks?
D

My thesis was 264 pages long so not that long, but did contain three journal papers inserted as jpeg format, a rediculous number of graph insertions and some diagrams too. In total, the whole thesis was about 30mb, much larger than I can send via email so had to share via dropbox. I too was advised that Latex might be easier in handling a thesis type document but I also felt I was too far along with the writing to start learning a new skill. I am not sure if Latex can be shared on such media as dropbox either. I have to say that a fair few frustrations at the end resulted from MS word not playing fair with me, lots of expletives! I am sure you have seen it all with hubby going through the same so at least you have a sympathetic ear.

Word help - page breaks?
D

Yes, when the document is as a whole the breaks may not be in the most desired place etc so with mine I had to play with the formatting once it was all done. I did my thesis as a whole word doc which did have some hiccups being so large, such as going into 'read only' mode part way through the editing each time I opened it, arghh (an MS word issue). I just had to save it as a slightly different title ie version 1 etc after each evening of revisions. I did consider seperate docs but didn't want the chaos of re-starting the pagination correctly for each doc. Likewise it was easier PDFing the whole document to send to printers for binding. I am sure there must be easier ways of thesis writing lol.
