Conference dinner outfit?
E

At my last conference, at dinner you could see everything! And I mean it!
From formal dresses and suit and tie to jeans and T-Shirts....
Ans it was one of the major international conferences in my field....

Length of literature review?
E

Mine is in two chapters as well.
One (conceptual framework) around 7000 words, and one (main literature review on my subject) around 8000 words.
I'm in the social sciences as well, and my max is 80,000 words

How do you cope when, just like buses...
E

Well done from me, too!!!!!
I know moving to a new city can be difficult at first (mind you I have moved a lot during and after my studies!!!!), but it can also be fascinating! Meeting new people, doing new things, getting to know new naighbours..... I really miss that!!!!!!!!!

A new job....if that's not fascinating, then what is? And if it is something that you want to do (not something that you have to do) then it is even better!!!!!!!!!!

And finally, new relationship!!!!!!!! Getting to know each other... the good and the bad things...... the new experiences....

Wel done!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. I am not in London, but I go there every time I come to UK. I really love this city!!!!!

Passed VIVA!
E

Well done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had my PhD viva
E

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now get on with your corrections as soon as possible and then you can put it all aside and progress!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Deciding what to call interviewees in findings?
E

I can tell you what I did...
I interviewed people in Greece, and I used names that were small and used in UK... one of the main reasons was that in Greece we have huge manes that no other person can read, so I decided to use small, everyday, English names.
Whenever I mention one of my participants, I use his/her "name", gender, role and age-group (e.g. emmaki, female student, 30-35)

So many things, so little time...
E

Arggggggggggggg
Time for moaning.......
I've been in bed for the last couple of days with the worst stomach virus that exists!!!!!! I can barely stand on my feet......
Yesterday I received an email from my uni that I have one month to submit my year report.
I have to re-write 2 chapters (one major re-write, one minor) and I have to write a third chapter from scratch.
I also have to prepare 2 conference presentations (one for a national conference -that's the easy one- and one for a major international conference where my supervisor will also be).
And I have to do all these until Easter!

Good luck to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:-(:-(:-(:-(

how much money you earn ??
E

Quote From stressed:

That is just incredible... that you have to sign up for 10 YEARS??? with that little freedom?? OMG.... So what happens if you decide that teaching isn't for you? There must be a lot of totally demotivated teachers there who are just doing their time, there certainly would be here ;-)

If I was appointed in anther place (not near the borders) then I would have to stay there for 3 years and then I could get transfered (and stay at my new place for 2 years).
Now, I have to stay at teaching for 10 years, but I can get transfered.....
This is the reason why there are very few teachers who want to start teir teaching career at places near the borders! The majority prefer to go somewhere else...
And if teaching was not for me.....then we woiuld have a problem!!!!! A major one!

Quote From emmaki:

Well, I am working FT and doing a PT PhD.
Currrently, I earn 1200 euros per month (about 1000 pounds), and when I finish my PhD, I will be getting 15 euros more per month (that is about 12 pounds)...
I can't leave my job, since I have a contract for 10 years (although it is a permanent job, I have to stay at it for at least 10 years)...
So, not much of a difference for me..........

Being forced to work in a job for ten years seems a bit harsh, is that the terms of your funding then???

I don't have any funding!!!!!! I am paying for my Phd!
These are the terms of my permanent teaching position!!
It is unfair, but this is the situation in my country. And I wanted to live and work here (although now I have started to think it again)....

If you are not from here, it is difficult to understand! I guess we are used to it.........

Loneliness of the long-distance researcher
E

I am studying at a distance from my uni (different country) and I am working FT....
I don't feel lonely and I don't miss anything from being a student (I had a fair share of student life!!!! I think 5 years were enough!!! )
I have my friends, who, although they don't have PhDs, can understand me. They know (probably from my mum) when I need to go out, what I need to be alone and they respect this.
This is my third year of studies and I owe a lot to my friends!
I also have my parents! A mum who understands completely what I am going through (she had to leave a PhD several years ago due to personal reasons) and tries to help me the best way she can. And a dad who, although does not know anything about my subject, is so proud of me and cares a lot about my well-being and my sanity!!!!

I really owe a lot to so many people!!!!!!!

emmaki, surely you have more freedom of contract than that. You can't have to do a job for ten years!

Oh Yes I do!!!!
Because I work at a place near the borders of the country, and because I work in the public sector (education), I have to stay at my post for at least 10 years. Otherwise, I will have to pay back all the money I got....
Of course, I am free to move cities if I wish (and then stay there for at least 2 years before I can move again)....
