Good mornig everybody!
I am looking for this paper
Buzzanell, P. M. (2001) Gendered practices in the contemporary workplace. Management communication quarterly, 1493), pp 517-537

Does anybody have access to it?
Thank you all in advance!

Interview Transcription- What would you do?
E

Well, I had 40 interviews in Greek and I had to transcribe them and then translate them into English....
It was very difficult. Most of the time I wanted to throw my computer off the window or smash it with something heavy! I was almost always dizzy and my eyes were really sore.
But I got really familiar with my data, and I have managed to remember a lot them and know where to look for them

Part-time PhD
E

Personally, I work around 4-5 hours every day. After my F/T work and after having lunch at my parents' (it is an advantge to live near your mum...)
Of course there are days when I work more (even whole nights) because I want to finish immediately my tasks (I know it is crazy, but that's me) and there are other days when I do nothing, because I just can't even look at PhD stuff...

You will find this alone. It depends on the subject, on your other commitments, on the work you have to do....

Good luck! And welcome!!!!!!!

Part-time PhD
E

Hi!
I am working on my P/T PhD (writing up at the moment), while working F/T, living in Greece and having English as second language!
So, adding to distance and work, there is the barrier of language, as well!
I have a very strict routine and I am (almost always) very disciplined.
You have to have a programme. You have to arrange your PhD aroung your non-working time and at the same time have some time for yourself...
It can be done, but it is difficult. And Bilbo gave the best advice: It is a marathon, not a sprider!

Any scientists tempted to join the brain drain?
E

To tell you the truth, if I didn't have a permanent job (which I got after going through a very difficult and competitive examination process), I would love to go somewhere else.
I am Greek and I live and work in Greece. The current climate here is not good, and a lot of people my age are seriously thinking of going away in order to do some research. Moreover, younger people, who start their studies now, are going away from Greece in order to study and with having in mind to never return back...

How long should answers be?
E

Although I still have a long way till viva, just a quick question.

What if I have already included the answer to this question (Why this subject? What is your contribution?) in my thesis?

how much does a PhD Cost?
E

Tuition fees depend on whether you are an EU/UK or oversees student. Also fees depend on the field. I guess science PhDs cost more that humanities as they have experiments, expensive material etc.
Mine (PT) costs around 1300 pound per year.
I can't advise about funding, as I am self-funded and haven't looked for any source of fundining.
Finaly, the grade depends on the university, the department, the competion etc
(I had a first degree 74,9%, so I guess it is about 2:1, and two masters in completely different fields)

My day at the job centre...
E

My first experience from a Job Center (well its Greek equivalent) was just after my first master. I was told about a job in a kindergarten (that was good as it was what I had studied) for 10 hours a day and for 350 euros per month (that is about 280 pounds)!!!
Ridiculously long hours and ridiculously low payment!

Any examples of poor experimental design? (papers)
E

I just came accross a bad one involving behaviour of babies aged 1-and-a-half day.
If you are interested, PM me and I can give you the details

My first literature chapter
E

Thank you all!!!!!!
Good luck with your research and I hope you all have good results soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(up)

Just getting ready for interview
E

Best of luck!
Everything will be fine!

My first literature chapter
E

I just got my first literature review chapter back from my supervisor.

When I saw it, it was as shock for me, as it seemed to be all red with corrections! But after reading the corrections, I saw that there weren't any major ones. Just move paragraphs and expand 1 or 2 arguments...
So, I am very pleased with myself and I am ready to move on with the corrections and re-draft the chapter.
It is very important for me. It makes me really proud of myself, as the whole PhD procedure is very difficult because I am working FT, I live in Greece (my uni is in UK) and my first language is not English....

I am really happy and wanted to share it! Thank you all for being happy for me!

My father received a letter like that by post. It was in Greek and it mentioned relatives in South America that died and left a lot of money. My father's brother and his family is in Brazil, so he got really worried, although I told him not to believe these b****t

I can get an inter-library load at my uni as well, BUT I am not living in the UK (I visit the uni every three months) and they can't post the interlibrary loans abroad! Meaning that if I need a paper I will have to ask someone to send me a PDF! :$

This is ridiculous. It seems you never used interlibrary loans or if you don't want to state your real reason don't post a comment. If your friend can send a PDF, BL can send as well. Whenever I asked interlibrary loans BL always sent a PDF, even the very dated articles.

Of course I have used interlibrary loans.
Maybe you haven't read what I have written!
I said that my uni can't post to me the papers I need so I have to ask online friends to give me the papers!
I don't have any reason to post anything but the truth here!
I don't know how you have managed to get BL to send you PDFs but I can't! I can't even have access to BL, as I don't have a permanent address in UK and I can't have anything with my address translated into english, as there is a bureaucratic issue that cen't be overcome!
