Quote From catalinbond:

Emmaki, I'd have thought at most universities you can get an interlibrary loan. At mine it costs £2 per article but it gets you things that you could not otherwise get.

I think this is a fairly interesting topic. I've asked friends to get me papers that my Uni does not subscribe to, but I've always thought it was probably in some way wrong. I suspect if you asked someone in the library whether it was ok to send a PDF to a friend at another university they'd tell you it was not ok.

That said .... does anyone have access to this journal.......:p

I can get an inter-library load at my uni as well, BUT I am not living in the UK (I visit the uni every three months) and they can't post the interlibrary loans abroad! Meaning that if I need a paper I will have to ask someone to send me a PDF! :$

What about me? I think I won....:p:-x

paper help please

Eskobastion,
may I ask you something?
I am doing a part-time PhD in a UK university and I am from Greece (living and working in Greece).
My university does not subscribe to some of the journald that I need. How on earth will I get the necessary papers from my reserach if not by asking other people (whom I wish to call friends, even if we have never met)? Do you think that I should quit my research? Because if I don't have the literature that I need, it is the same as quiting.....

Help
E

Most universities have a minimum period of study of 2 years full time and 3 years part time.
So, I guess that it is very difficult (if not impossible) to be accepted for a 1 year PhD!

Can any PhD Students give me some advice?
E

Well, my undergrad degree was on pre-primary education (that is the education of 4-6-year-olds), my first master was on special needs education (all ages). Then I did an MBA (completely different field) and now, my PhD is on Sociology!!!!!

This is a change of fields!!!!!!
I never had any problems and I believe that if you like what you are doing, you can do it!

What about color or theter?

Proposal frustrations - lack of feedback and wasted time
E

My proposal was 1 and a half page (single space) plus references....
I think it was so short. Maybe 3-4 pagew is good, as you can make your point by presenting the gap, proposed methodology and timescale.
But 30-50 pages is tooooooooooooo long....

Viva tomorrow
E

Well done Dr B!!!!!!
AND with no corrections!!!!!!!!!!!
Well done!!!!!!!!!!!

I've just been shopping with my old friend Kean Bean!
E

Mmmmmmmmm..........let me think about it!
Maybe we can find a way to do it!!!!!!!!

I've just been shopping with my old friend Kean Bean!
E

I really envy you!
One of the things I miss, as I am living in Greece....
What about setting up a meeting in Greece??????????????

Can't finish my thesis - any advice?
E

J have to agree with J.
I don't think that you can get anything if you don't give them something! An MPhil is not something that you get like that. It needs a thesis, shorter than that of a PhD, and a viva (at least at my uni).
You have to make the time to work on your thesis! Weekends and evenings are more than enough for writing it!
I work full-time, I am doing a part-time PhD at an area completely different than the one I am working in, I am living in another country, and, in addition to these, my native language is not English.... I am in my third year now, and I am writing my thesis. I am trying to find time in my day. I work 8-2, and I work on my thesis 3-10! It is very tiring but I want to do it. I want to finish. If you want it too, then you will find time for it!

I passed!!!
E

Well done!!!!!!!!!!
Many many congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(sorry for the delay, but I wasn't near a computer for a couple of days)

Living arrangements
E

I rent a 3 bedroom house in a small Greek city. My parents' house is just accross the street, which is very good (you know, fresh, cooked food, clean and ironed clothes....:p ).
My work is 2 minutes walk from my house.
The university...that's another story.... I have to drive 4 hours to go to the airport and then I have to take a 3.5 hours flight!!!

But I manage both financially (although I live entirely from my job, that's about 17,000 euros per year, about 14,000 pounds), physically and mentally (working full-time and doing a PhD)...

Can't believe I'm in third year!
E

I am one month into my third year!
It's been so fast for me, too...
I never thought that by my third year I would have been writing (I have already 2 chapters ready and a third one as a schedule) as I am working full-time, I am doing my PhD part-time AND I am living in another country (and have another first language)....
Typically, I am not in my final year yet, but I feel like I am! As a matter of fact, if I wanted, I guess I could finish by June, but I don't want to pressure myself do muc (mind you I am not very young, I am 32, and I also want to do other things in my life than working and writing all day)!!!!!!!!!

Routine
E

I am in my 3rd year of a PT PhD, while working FT as a SEN teacher.
I have to have a routine, otherwise the game is lost!
So my daily routine is:
6:45 Wake up
8-2:30 Work
2:30-3 Lunch
3:30-10 or 11: work on my PhD
11-12: TV/or something else
12: Sleep

Having this routine has helped me a lot, as I have managed to have a quite good progress (I have finished my literature review, (almost) my methodology chapter and a first analysis chapter) and I am part-time.....
