I am not sure that you can use papers that are based on a project from your previous studies. In fact I am pretty sure that the research should be unique and not part of another degree. I could be wrong, though....

Stupid question - Methodology
E

Well, I am doing qualitative research. I plan to interview a total of 40 people. I have already done my pilot and I believe that I can do it, despite the fact that I will have to do double work as the interviews will be in Greek and I will have to translate them into English...But it is a research that really interests me and my supervisors and we believe that it can be done....We'll see..........

Interdisciplinary Study - pros and cons
E

I agree with blackbyrd.
An interdisciplinary research or even a change of subject is interesting. But it needs a lot more studying!!! I can speak from personal experience, as my firts degree was is pre-primary education, then I did a Masters in special needs, then an MBA and I ended up doing a PhD in sociology, where I incorporate knowledge from my previous studies...

Experience from an international conference
E

Well, I just came back from my first presentation in an international conference (well, my first presentation in any conference!!)!
I am very excited!!!!!! It was fantastic!!! My presentation was fine, people found it very interesting and it raised quite a few questions.
But, the best outcome was the connections! I met wonderful people from all over the world, top scientists in various fields. I even found a PhD opportunity in the US (but I have already started mine in the UK), a research assistantship, several proposals for co-authorship and (something that was quite funny but made my boyfriend really mad) a MAN (a professor from Taiwan told me that he liked me a lot and thought that I could be the perfect woman for his son. He even proposed to cover my travel expenses so that I could go to Taiwan and meet his son!!!! Of course I refused!).
Just to cut a long story short, this conference gave a huge boost to my confidence, as I thought that I (being just a student) didn't know a lot of things and wasn't able to start a decent conversation with academics. I proved myself wrong

When am I going to know?
E

Of course I am ready for my presentation, but it still is a problem. A draft programme has been announced, but my name is not in there and I am very frustrated. My proposal was accepted since September and my registration is paid since April!!!!!!!!
I think that I will keep sending them emails everyday, even if I keep receiving the same fixed answer ("Your question has been forwarded to the appropriate people"!!!)........
And hopefuly I will get an answer before the first day.............

Extra-curricular activties
E

Well, today and for the next three days my distraction will be the national archery championship!!! Very relaxing.....Too bad that this year I didn't have any time to go to practice and so I am not competing........:-(

When am I going to know?
E

Hello everybody. I need your opinions on something.
I have sent a proposal to an international conference. It was accepted and I paid the registration. The conference is on the 8th of July (in a few days) and I still don't know when I am going to make my presentation. I have emailed the organising committee twice and got the same response "we forward your message to the appropriate people".
How long does it take? I am losing my patience. And there is also the practical issue. I have to make travel arrangements, I have to prepare my presentation (I can't go there on the first day and being told "Emmaki you are presenting in 30 minutes")....

Summer break from thesis: various sports / projects
E

eeeeerrrrrrrrrrr.....unfortunatelly, it is natural to enjoy sea and fishing and anything else related to the sea and sun!!!!! Although, I wish it was also the first one....:p:p:p

Summer break from thesis: various sports / projects
E

Well, I go fishing and swimming. I find both of them very relaxing and rewarding (when we catch good fish!!!!). But this is kind of natural for me, as I am Greek...

How can I deal with this bad supervisor?
E

======= Date Modified 28 Jun 2009 21:28:39 =======
Well, being an outsider, I think that you are cruel and rude to the person who tried to help you. As I told you before, I can understand that losing a baby can be very difficult, but I don't think there is a need to turn against people who try to help you by giving you their advice. After all it is their opinion, which you have asked, and you are not obliged to agree with what they are saying.

I strongly feel that you should speak to someone about your problems, and by someone I don't mean your friends. I believe someone with experience on dealing with problems, a counsellor, a psychologist, can give you the help and support that you need.

How can I deal with this bad supervisor?
E

I am really sorry that you lost your baby.
BUT I beleieve that you are a little unfair with your supervisor. A PhD, whether we want to see it or not, is a job. If you had a "normal" employer, do you think that s/he would let you tale leaves like that? Even if they wanted to help you, they wouldn't have that affect your work and maybe their work, or the work of a lab.
I understand what you said about your religion, but you have to think is it possible to do your PhD, being in a lab with potentailly dangerous chamicals for the baby and have 1,2,3 babis in 4 years time?
Maybe all these feeelings is anger because you lost your baby. Maybe you need to see some specialist and talk about how you feel. Maybe, also, if you feel that it is your supervisor's fault you need to speak with him/her about it, or even with the lab people that you believe stress you.

I don't want to sound judgemental, but I really believe that you need to calm down a little bit, see a specialist and re-consider your options.

MIchael Jackson has died - :-(
E

I was shocked when I hears it. I can't say that I didn't expect it.
When I was in my early teens I spent a lot of months trying to copy his dance!!!
It is sad when people leave so early and when they have things to give

hahahaha
E

Well, I am presenting at an international conference in July. I felt the same as you (I have just finished my first year of PhD) but then I thought "They must have started from somewhere! Why them and not me? They are not better than me!!!" Maybe they are better, maybe they have more experience, but I can do it too!
Good luck!

Doing a PhD while living elsewhere - can it work?
E

I am doing my PhD from distance, in fact I am based in another country. I go to my uni every 3-4 months to meet with my supervisor. At the same time I am working full-time as a special needs teacher. I don't say that it is easy, but it is doable if you really want to do it and you love your research! I still do, but I have only just finished my first year (I hope that I will go on loving it to the end!!!!!):p

PhD in a foreign language
E

Well, I don't think it's a good idea to write in your language and then translate it into English. The structure of my language, at least, is very different from that of the English language, so when Itried to do that for my first master I ended up with a text that nobody could understand, but yet to me (and to other Greeks) it was good! But when I started writing it in English from the beginning, the result was much much better.
But this is only personal experience. Given the fact that I have no idea about Italian, I maybe wrong and such a thing is doable.
