I'm looking for PhD position
E

There is no magic advice even if your average is 90%.try to look for RA tole.If you publish papers, you will have higher chances. If the PhD is really important to you, look now for jobs (academia and outside) and try again in a year or two. If you believe your score would still blocking you, do another Master and try to get a higher score. What I would not do, is to keep insisting on applying while you believe you won't be accepted with your GPA.

Taking A Break
E

@pm133, I have fallen into the same trap in another post by judging the poster that repeated his/her post. Now I look at it differently, if the same question is asked a few months later, the answer now is urgent.
In deed, he/she might have not found enough opinions or might not liked the responses he/she got. It is absolutely fine to reask your question again a few months or years later if you still need an answer. Real life is full of meaningless repetitions and I think this post is definitely more important than a lot of things we read and hear in a daily basis.

Terminally ill parent during PhD

Hi. Although I have earlies recommended you to take a break, I look now in a different way after reading other responses. Taking long weekends sounds reasonable. Also one very bad thing a lot of people do, is to "sacrifice or hurt themselves" without giving the others any benefit. This is a common and bad behaviour to do the "unwanted useless" sacrifice for someone who does not need it.

Taking A Break
E

Hello lacaca. I am sorry you feel that way. I think what you face now is absolutely normal. Doing a part time PhD and spending your free time and spending money for it is something most people are not capable of. First, you have to appreciate what you have started and what you have achieved so far. You made a brave choice which I am personally still hesitated to make.
There is usually a time frame in the PhD where almost everyone hits the wall. Not surprisingly it is the point where the PhD student whould move from the making progress phase to the results and conclusions phase. Add to this being lonely and having no colleagues, you have every reason to really hit the wall. So do not be hard to yourself.
Now what to do? Taking a break seems really reasonable. If I were you, I would say for example, I am not going to do anything in the PhD until March or April. There is no problem with this. But when decide to take a break, take it to the full. Do not feel guilty.
I would not recommend giving up at all. Not because you already started and spent time and money, but because you wanted a PhD in the first place. You want it whatever pragmatic or romantic reasons you have for wanting a PhD.

Job After MS
E

Hi. I would quote a reply to a similar post before. Some PhD graduates do full time lab demonstration jobs. You have not wasted two years doing Master. If you keep looking to things like that, your life would be like a hell.
Another point. Do you have currently a PhD offer that would start in a later date? If not, do not think of the job as a temporary one because this will make things more difficult. Let us call things by their real name. You want to do a PhD, apply now for PhDs. Meanwhile look for a job you would be a bit happy to do it and accept the fact that you may get or not get a PhD position.
One thing you forgot to add to the post. I am now "xx years old" and by this age I should have received a Noble prize (just kidding).

Thanks kenziebob for your advise. I have registered at reddit. I am going to explore it in the next days. Usually you hear women saying " I just want someone to listen to me, I do not want a sloution". Although I am a man, but this is what I need sometimes. Someone to listen and understand. That is it. But it is still even too much to have :)

Hi guys. This an off topic thread. I wonder if any of you knows a forum, app, chat groups where someone is able to complain or talk or look for opinions of others about workplace problems or even personal life problems. It is really painful when you discover that you have almost no friends and the few friends you have, you do not feel confortable sharing these details with them. Part of it is being anonymous but in my opinion the important part is not having the "right people " in your circle that you feel comfortable to talk and expect a better feeling after talking with them.

Conference funding application - justification

Good to know you made it. Nice of you that you post after the problem is solved.

I would like also to add this. Sometimes you read "10 advices from Steve Jobs or Bill Gates or Einstein or Elon Musk". Why it is written like this, even if these advices were not really said by them? Because the writer knows that these are influencers and people would be interested to read what they say. Similarly for social media followers. I do not claim that this is a smart way for doing things and I am not personally influenced by stories in social media. But my point is we read and hear all opinions (except for people who have no empathy) and give a particular attention to influencers who are not necessarily famous or very successful (from the general public view).

E

I agree partially with first point. This does not mean I will ignore other posts or only look for the view of this poster. It is an "extra" motivation to read the post and the other responses.
I do not agree with the second point. In workplace or personal life we value the opinion of some people more than others. This does not mean these opinions are always the right way to go or we should only listen to these views but we usually have a narrow circle "you are again partially right" of people who we believe could understand what we want to express and also have something in common.
I know it is not very best way to live life. But let me take an example when I told a friend that I left my job already and was preparing to move abroad to pursue Master. His first comment was that I did something wrong and if I do not like my job, I should have looked for another one. My problem was not he had a different view. My problem that his advice was useless as he knew it was already too late and I was just informing him. This kind of disheartening is not going to add anything to people like me who get affected easily by these kind of comments.

E

This might be already known for everyone but I will write it anyway. There are several reasons that make me read the posts in the forum. Of course the title. Another important factor is who has commented on a post. Some posters usually post controversial views but they have usually different perspectives which is worth reading.
Another non secret fact that most of us when posting, hope that a "particular poster" replies to their post and value the opinion of this "particular poster" very much. Actually, there is unseen mutual understanding and mutual appeciations between some posters and others.

Need Choices Please For Master's In Entrepreneurship. Online Or Full-Time?
E

If I were you, I would choose fulltime especially if a scholarship is offered. If you are not the person who pushes himself all the time to study, part time won't also work for you. Lund is a prestigious university.

Dilemma Another Postdoc (after a bad experience in both postdoc and PhD) ? Industry ?
E

Why the ultimate goal should ne only a lecturer or a professor? There is research office jobs. Also 3 first author publication after a PhD is absolutely fine. I would also quote TQ for NEVER listening to people who lack empathy. You will not go nowhere with listening to them. We are human after all. We need sometimes to be pragmatic but most importantly, to work from passion. Industry will wull always be there. If you spend 3 more years as a Postdoc then decided to go to industry, what is the problem?
I moved to industry after 2 years RA role then another 5 years RA role in the meantime unsuccessful PhD). I am not particularly proud of my 5 RA experience which included unsuccessful PhD but also it is not the most horrible thing to put in a CV.
By the way, it is not uncommon for lecturers and professors to have 3-4 Postdoc posts before getting a lecturer job.
Regarding this meaningless comment

Quote From Walter_Opera:

If you want to become a professor, frankly, you are also sort of late after 9 years of doctoral/postdoctoral studies. TBH it is kind of late for you to be worrying about your lack of publications now. Your peers with whom you will compete for professorships now probably have their first research group leaderships, churn out papers monthly, accumulate acquired funding, are forging networks etc.

I would quote a joke about a father who wanted to motivate his son saying "When Napoleon was your age, he was the first in his class, the son answered, when Napoleon was your age, he was an emperor".

Competitiveness in Academia
E

Hi monkia. I fully support you and wish you the best. Here comes the "but". I think you need a bit of personal development. You should accept your defeat in your last PhD. Thinking too much that you were brilliant and the supervisor was evil won't help anymore even if this is the truth. After a failure, we usually think it is not fair. Yes it can be unfair. But what is more important is what comes next. One important quality of strong persons, and I think you are one of them, is to know how to move on. Do not cry too much over the spilt milk. It is gone.
Going to the point of being 28. Oh my God, too old. Is this what you wanna hear? I knew persons finished their PhDs when they were 26. friends got their first child when they were 24. Everybody is different. I have crossed fourty and work in a job with people ten years younger and do the same job or even more senior roles. 28 is young. Actually very young. If you graduate at 23 and retire at 63, then you have passed 1/8 of your professional life. Forget about bullshit posts in social mdeia which say "Things you must do before 30" and role model stuff. You know what is worse than being 28 and not accomplishing what you "think you should have done"? Worst is wasting 20 years and being 48 and stands in the same position.
Now coming back to the PhD problem. If I were you, I would still apply but also I look for jobs that is related to lab or research. If you dream of a PhD, try not to end up jobless because you did not accept to lower your ambition. If you got a job, it adds to you financially and professionally and yu still can do a PhD later. All the best.
