I have a thing for marshmallows which comes and goes. And I go through macaroni cheese phases where I have it every night for a few days on the run. Fabulous with a couple of different mustards in the sauce and tomatoes and crispy breadcrumbs on the top. I had both mac cheese and marshmallows this eve.

Greek salad too, when I start having it it means winter is over - I had my first 2010 bowl a couple of weeks ago, hopefully that's not too optimistic. I've tons of it since then, am on my second pack of feta.

And Scouse! Which I also go through phases with. Haven't had it for ages.

Yeah, Jinkim I usually avoid Liverpool City centre on Friday nights and Saturdays, for all those reasons you mentioned. I just had t go there for some reason the other week. I had heard talk of the roller wearing ladies, but actually seeing it is quite an experience.

funding, competition, and standards of work
Avatar for Eska

Hi folks, this is related to KC's thread, but I don't want to hijack it, so here is my own:

HHmmmm, I'm having a bit of a confidence tremor today: I asked my sup about funding as I ear-wigged him discussing a pot of money availale in the department with another student, just that they might be able to apply for it, so I wrote to him asking if there is any funding available. He said that my 'track record (previous degree results etc) would not be strong enough to put me at he top of the pile' (I have a bare pass for my MA due to political shenannegans and a 2:1 at BA), given that funding is scarce and competition in the department strong. So does this mean I'm crap - was he being tactful (he is usually refreshingly and re-assuringly honest and direct, almost blunt)? Or just that you have to get firsts to get funding on my manor? Do you think this refelcts on my PhD work? I'm quite intimidated by the standards of some of the students' work and there is a symposium coming up so I think I'm feeling a bit nervous anyhow.

Some of the seminar presntations I have seen at my department have been amazing, and I wonder if and how my work can stand up to them, but perhaps that is a matter of a lack of confidence on my part.

I wish I got 40 quid an hour, I'm on 33.50, at all of three different places I teach for.

Hi Wally, I'm an asscoiate lecturer and the drill is as follows: Did you ever study the ancient Roman army at school? Well, we are very much like foot soldiers: expendable; expected to live, against the odds, off meagre offerings; expected to march in difficult and treacherous conditions; and can be randomly decimated at a second's notice. Although, on second thoughts, I think foot soldiers were probably wuite well fed, so not entirely comparable after all.

As far as I know, it's another name for the temporary, termly teaching contracts universities operate - a step below fixed term contracts.

Is anyone any good at DIY? I jus bought an air drill...

Will I really need ear plugs and goggles to drill a hole in the wall? hmmmm, wonder if swimming goggles would do it.

Hi folks, I'm hoping one of yu can help me get to grips with my new air drill. It says I need an 'air supply', don't we all have one of those on this planet? free of charge. Hmmm, so does anyone know what an air supply is.

Also, do you know if air drills are safe? Do I need proper gear? There isn't much info in the instruction manual.

I'm being all self motivated and am aiming to do loads of jobs around the home, like pt up my Ikea coat rack which I bought 2 years ago.

Oh no! Wally, that means I have to do something really difficult to improve my health, such as excercise or give up sausages and ice cream.

hey Jinkim, Tescos may have banned pyjama wearing, but sommerfields actively encourages it - I think they have pyjama loyalty card, wear 'em two nights on the run and you get a free bag of dorritos. Have you been to Topshop on a Saturday afternoon? Shoals of girls in full make-up, giant sized rollers and PJs or day wear (Ugg boots etc) presumably choosing that night's outfit, it's the scouse day look.

Because I teach in art schools I've started to think blue streaks are the norm, and am wondering if I could work them into my look - they are infectious. Actually, I'd really lke bright red or pink hair, but probably not for very long.

Hi all, Yes, I am a lazy PhDer and I have an unhealthy habit I need to kick. I drink diet coke... a lot. I get through about 5 cans a week, I see it as a treat, and at times, crave it. The longest I have been without it in the last few years is about 10 days. So, yes, my insides are probably rotten and my brain horrifically corroded by now. Thus, I am making a public pact to stop drinking it, to put an edn to the nagging feelings at the back of my mind about what it's doing to my bones, my brain and my stomach, not to mention the big c word. I have to do this, altough even now I am thinking about the brown bubbly stuff. But thanks for the reminder about aspartame poison, rotten poison.

Right, I'm ging out for fish and chips, whichh I usually have with diet coke, but things are changing. I will but fresh orange juice.

Bug, I hope things are ok with you. Big, international hugs. (((())))

Hi Jinkim, yes, I am a fellow Merseysider! There's my anonymity slipping further and further away... Cans of diet coke are still cheap at 25p each, that's the best price I've ever seen.

hey Wally, I'm going to ignore the dress code etc and gatecrash your thread in my dodgy outfit.

Has anyone read the 'Is it just me or is everyting s***?' books they're hilarious...

I agree about chocolate, although Home and Bargain on Merseyside is a last bastion of affordable confectionery, if you ever make the trip. It's also good for high quality low cost wines, particularly rose.

bereavement etiquette.
Avatar for Eska

I agree with Teek, I don't think you are being pathetic at all - it is often hard to now how to respond to bereavement, and I imagine it is even harder when it's your supervisor. This said, I would send a card, in my experience, they are always appreciated, and its a professionally safe way of letting him know that you care.
